Chief Grey Bear Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Here is another shorty on the Prairie Chicken. Alot has been learned since this film was first produced over 50 years ago, yet the PC is almost completely gone from Missouri. I could go into long tirade about the managment or lack of, and the politics of it but I won't. Wayne SW/MO Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I don't know if it's all their fault. This is the edge of their range and so much has changed outside their control. I know you and the other bird hunters on here can remember when you looked for covey of quail in the fence rows, now you have to look hard for a fence row. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Chief Grey Bear Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 You are right, it is not all their fault. But when they have thousands of acres of contiguous prairie land and able to work with other entities that had large concentrations of these birds that have continued to decline due to managment practices, then I have no one else to point to. Terrierman Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Taberville brings back fond memories of a time when I was young and curious instead of old and confused. It would have been quite something indeed to have a prairie chicken dance on your head.
Bird Watcher Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 It's a shame. It was so neat when I was a kid to go pond fishing with my Dad and the Chickens would be booming in the prairie next to the lakes we were fishing. On private land no less. Now, the only place I know of to even glimpse one is on the prairie preserves. Then again, about the only place I know of to see prairie is on the prairie preserves. I'm sure there's a direct correlation. Even 20 years ago you could still see a good amount of prairie on private land but I was just talking to Dad the other day about how it's all plowed crop land now. It's sad that I'll probably never be able to show that to my daughter unless we go to a state park area or refuge.
