cpriest Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 i have been wanting to go night fishing up on beaver for a while now and think i have pretty much all the tricks figured out except for what size leader and tippet to use. Do you/can you use a different size (stronger) since it is at night and you are somewhat targeting larger fish? i don't want to scare them off, but at the same time if i hook up with a big one i want to atleast give myself (and the fish) a chance, not sure how possible that is on a 8x tippet. I know night fishing isnt as big on beaver as the other tailwaters, but im sure some of yall go out once and a while! thanks guys
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted November 10, 2006 Root Admin Posted November 10, 2006 I'm not expert but I'd say the bigger the fly the bigger the leader. When I throw a fairly large fly like a bunny leach, 3x isn't too big. But if I'm throwing a soft hackle or crackleback I'd use 5x. But then there's moonlite night and dark nights. You could second guess yourself to death!
ecce38 Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 Chase, for night fishing I wouldn't use anything smaller than 4x. Also, make sure you have a light to wear around your hat. Frees up your hands too. Guest flyfishBDS Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 And if you haven't cast at night before, take a few practise runs without a fly. You need to get used to not seeing the flyline, cast with your ears Pick your spots to fish, and get to know then real well, its pretty cold now so you don't wnat to fill your waders. Other than that I'd probably start with 4x flouro. Cheers
cpriest Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 thanks guys, i plan on going out probably thanksgiving week if anyone is going to be around and wants to go out, let me know
