Vise, thread, materials and you're almost there. You still have to put on a hood and make a trip to Walmart and the nail polish department for some clear Hard As Nails nail polish. Best and cheapest head cement available.

Does anyone have a youtube channel that they watch to learn different flies for smallmouth? Iv tired looking on my own and have found a few. Just trying to watch and learn... which sucks cause I'd rather be tying but my vise and materials wont be in for a few days. So all I get to do is watch videos. However, today is a great day to be inside. March Madness, a mild blizzard outside, and not working today. lol

I would concentrate on what you intend to tie first. The reasoning is that you will learn all the simple steps that apply to virtually all flies.

As I said before both of these are effective and simple to tie and with minimal materials. By the time you tie an assortment in effective colors you should be ready to tackle anything.

Yeah, there are lots of variations on the technique. I've tied lots of Clousers, but the video addresses one of the issues I always have -- that's a big block end on the tips of the buck tail.

I also learned something on the treatment of marabou in the bugger video. I've never seen the technique where you break off the fine tips.

One more question on thread. I know that the 6/0 thread is "the fly tying thread" but can you not just use the cheap stuff? I went to Walmart to day to see if they had any thread that would be tough. But they just had the cheap stuff so I picked out a few. Should iI just put it in a sewing kit or give it a shot on a fly?

I use 3/0 on the bulk of my warm water flies. I'm not sure that sewing thread will work, I was under the impression that it was cotton and tying threads are synthetics. I like Uni myself which is a strong spun poly thread. I don't believe cotton will handle the water well.

Yeah I figured it wouldn't but on the off chance it would I picked up a few. Lol sounds like I need to make a run to Springfield and go to one of the fly shops, and get some thread.
