flyrodman Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I have a problem and am hoping to get some input. I received A Dyna King Trekker for Christmas. I had only tied streamers with hooks no smaller than size 4. The vise feels like a tank and I can bend a 1/0 B10s all the way around. When I started tying trout flies this weekend, I could not get a size 8 or smaller to stay put without slipping. No amount of adjustment allows for a firm hold. Anyone have this problem? Yes No Luke Walz
dave potts Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I've got the same vise and have not seen that problem. However, I use the midge jaws on the smaller hooks. In your second picture it appears that the hook is not placed far enough back in the jaws to hold well. Have you tried placing it farther back? On a second look it appears it may have just pulled out to the edge of the jaw and was originally farther back.
ness Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I would bet that since Dyna King is sort of a premium brand, they'd have somebody in their office willing to talk to you about it. Sometimes companies will surprise you with what they can/will do for you if you just pick up the phone and ask nicely. John
flyrodman Posted March 26, 2013 Author Posted March 26, 2013 Dave, its was further back but slipped forward. Also, do you like the midge jaws? Ness, i just sent them an email to them about it, hopefully they will get back to me soon. Luke Walz
Members Hatch 82 Posted March 27, 2013 Members Posted March 27, 2013 I've tied 2/0 streamers to 22 midges in a kingfisher and not used the midge jaw without problems. Try adjusting it almost as tight as it goes also try putting more of the bend of the hook in the viseand if that doesn't work I'd say you have a defective jaw. I'd give Dyna king a call.
Jason R. Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I've tied on a dyna king and it was really nice with small hooks. I agree- you either have a defective part or something else is wrong. Also, stop bend your B10s! Send them to me and I'll try to get a fish to bend them for you! http://flyinthesouth.com/
dave potts Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Yea, I like the midge jaws. I use them for around size 12 and smaller. Have you tried cleaning and re-greasing the adjustment cone. Maybe you are not getting the cone adjusted down tight enough before clamping down the cam lever. Also, are you sure you are getting the midge jaw pushed far enough down when you change jaws. It needs to be pushed down far enough to fully engage the cam lever so it will draw tight. It will be interesting to see what the folks at Dyna-King have to say. Let us know. Dave Dave, its was further back but slipped forward. Also, do you like the midge jaws? Ness, i just sent them an email to them about it, hopefully they will get back to me soon.

Dave Just about to make the call. They havent responded to my email. Also a clarification, I don't own the midge jaws, I was just asking if you liked them, I'm considering buying some if I cant get this worked out. Luke Walz
flyrodman Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 Just got off the phone with them. The lady I talked to said that sz 12's can be troublesome with the standard jaws. They said to send the jaws in and they will look into replacing them with new ones. She also suggested the midge jaws for smaller tying. I'll probably mail the jaws tomorrow. Luke Walz
ness Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 There you go! How much is a set of midge jaws -- just curious? John
