rainbow Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 Phil, we flyfish Montauk several times per year. There are some great places above the dam to fish. If you go in past the park office and walk about 1/2 mile to the stream there is hardly anyone there in summer and no one in winter. Use the white Montauk nymph they are killers.
LostMyWife Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 Robbie and I are looking for somewhere closer to St Louis to practice. But, she has seen pictures of Montauk and Bennett Springs. The idea of fishing shoulder to shoulder with a few thousand of your closest friends is not real inviting for her. How many people are there during the C&R season? Is there someplace closer to St Louis, without going to the winter stock ponds in the city? Yes, I'm That Guy
Greg Posted November 27, 2006 Author Posted November 27, 2006 LMF being close to STL - you've got the Merramec river and Merramec Springs much closer to you. I've never fished either. But I've heard both are really nice in the winter season. Both Bennett and Montauk are much less crowded during the winter season. Nothing like the summer at all. Although some Saturdays at Bennett - there can be quite a few fisherman - but even then it is never shoulder to shoulder. mhall02 Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 FYI, the ponds stocked are not just in the city, Busch Wildlife Area in St. Charles CO has four lakes stocked, two are catch and release (#21 and #28) until Feb. 1st and they are pretty nice looking ponds/lakes, not the concrete sided ponds of the city. I would recommend giving them a try.
