Members dano979 Posted April 8, 2013 Members Posted April 8, 2013 For those who have been down the river very recently how is MD shoals and Halls bay? Also, what is the best route to run both of these? I keep reading stay right on MD and shoot down the left side of Halls Bay..? Any input would be appreciated.
snap Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 IMO....MD has an opening to the left that is easy (you will see it).......Halls bay, 3/4 ways to the left is safe!!!
Brian Sloss Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 The chute on the right is best now at MD, some stuff shifted and made it a little tighter on the left. Just don't run tight to the left bank @ Hall BaY, too steep a drop. You probably read about going left at the fork and bypassing the shoal. That went away a few years ago due to flooding. Just go down the middle and don't get sideways and you will fly through. Neither are hard to do. Both of those spots get all the attention, but it is normally the lesser known spots that turn a canoe over. If you are paying attention to what you are doing and make smart decisions you should not have any problems. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Members Boz1 Posted April 8, 2013 Members Posted April 8, 2013 We just ran through MD and had no problem. In fact we went back up it with a 4 horse motor on the back of a scanoe and ran it again and we never hit a thing.
Members flyfisherman Posted April 8, 2013 Members Posted April 8, 2013 River is good, I agree with Brian on MD shoals, I did the left route at MD, made it through on inflatable but it was a challenge, there are some logs that are in the preferred line of approach, if I had to do it over I would take right.
Greasy B Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 It has been many years since I floated through Halls Bay Shoal. I do remember hardly ever getting through without kissing a rock or two. My question is can jet boats navigate up and down Halls Bay? I have often wondered if the river just upstream from the shoal sees less power boat traffic. Brian Sloss Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I dare you to try taking one up and down Hall Bay. Every now and then someone will try and about 1 in 5 make it. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

With the horse power limits it unlikely we'll see UHMW lined boats on the river. I think I'll make a point of camping a couple of days just above the shoal on my next trip. Maybe that part of the river will be a little more quiet than above or below.
