crittermo Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Hello, Does anyone have any updates on what the bass & crappie are doing on LOZ. Any ideas on where we are on the spawning phases?
WHARFRAT Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I was down there last week, and big males were right on the bank, many were in the 10-11.5" range. Caught a couple of 13"+ females out from the bank in about 4' of water. On Thursday of last week, we had a real nice day and the fish moved off the bank in the 4-6' of water range. Also, talked to a bass fisherman that day that said he had one of his best days ever. I saw that he was throwing a chartreuse tandem spinner bait. When I saw him around 4pm, he said he had caught at least 25 keeper bass with 5 of them between 5 and 6 pounds. Plus he said he had caught a lot of shorts. Back to crappie. By Friday, they were all off the bank, started catching them on the back side of docks that were in approx. 10' of water, and was catching them in 3-8 foot down. Catching more small females, but still caught a couple of limits of 10" or better fish. I was fishing on the big Niangua between the 9 and 13mm. My bro-in-law is down there this week, and so far he said its a little frustrating. Not catching a lot of numbers, but still managing to get a limit. He's around the 31mm and Linn Creek area. Said the big females had no eggs, and the small females appear to be full. Hope that helps @lozcrappie
MOPanfisher Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Fished yesterday in the Browns Bend area. Report from the day before from a friend was that it was his best crappie fishing day ever. Not quite so good fo us. Did manage to get a limit but had to work at it. No pattern, a few on the pea gravel spawn banks, a few around some logs, some around docks etc. etc. Some pretty nice one and several shorts. of the 15, 2 were males and one was a female spawned out, the rest were big bulging belly females. I did catch one was was spewing eggs all over me, so it is happening. Didn't catch a white bass at all, which surpirsed me.
crittermo Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 thanks for the info wharfrat & mopanfisher, i appreciate it. did you ever notice that the the fishing is always better "yesterday" or "you should have been here last week"
WHARFRAT Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I agree with you. My vacation finally fell in "the week". Doesn't happen that often, especially when you have to give the dates you want so early in the year. That being said, you still should find really good action, you just might have to fish a little deeper and slower. But, if you are going after bass, I think it should really be good. Also, when I was down there, I had to get a part for my trolling motor, and the tech there said he had been catching walleye on crankbaits in HaHa Tonka Cove, just before sundown. I didn't try, so I'm just going off what he said. @lozcrappie
crittermo Posted May 1, 2013 Author Posted May 1, 2013 thanks for the info. i wish i was closer to ha ha tonka, i like walleye fillets as much or better than crappie. i am at the 5mm up by the dam so that would be a long trek for me. i hope to go fishing tomorrow but not sure yet. i'll let you know if i do any good.
