Members jibro Posted May 19, 2013 Members Posted May 19, 2013 HAve never floated the Big Piney and was wondering how the fishing was in this strech. Is there a better strectch to fish? SG
Al Agnew Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I wouldn't say it's much better or worse than stretches above and below it. It happens to be one of the slower parts of the Piney, with a lot of quiet water.
Members jibro Posted May 20, 2013 Author Members Posted May 20, 2013 slower water doesn't sound too promising for smallies SG
rainbow Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 We have fished that area and caught goggle eye and smallmouth. Good fighters but not much in the way of size. We stayed at Boiling Springs resort which was a pretty good place.
Gavin Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 The scenery is a little better between Mason and Ross Bridge but dont do the 6x to Ross stretch on the weekend...tons of floaters. East Gate down to the Gasconade is a pretty stretch too.
Members jibro Posted May 20, 2013 Author Members Posted May 20, 2013 we are going to go down friday night and float Saturday. really im looking for a float with least amount of people and best fishing (like we dont all look for that everytime we head out) yes i realize its Memorial Day weekend and there are going to be people but the Current and Meramec will be packed and i was hoping that the Big Piney is little more remote and plus i just wanted to fish a new river SG
Members jibro Posted May 20, 2013 Author Members Posted May 20, 2013 would it better to do Mason to Slabtown? SG
Gavin Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Mason is about 6.5 miles down from Boiling Springs CG...and Slabtown is about 9 miles above were the Redneck Riviera starts (6x)...I dont think the outfitters put boats on that stretch very often due to the logistics. If you have your own boats, and intend to camp on the river Friday & Saturday...no problem....If you need an outfitter...you might have a hard time making arrangements for that float on a Saturday.
Members jibro Posted May 20, 2013 Author Members Posted May 20, 2013 i do have my own canoe, however i spoke to a lady at boiling springs who was extremely nice and was willing to shuttle me for the Mason to Salbtown float. just told me talk to her about it when i arrived and if she suddenly had a bunch of people floating boiling spring to mason that she would put on the mason to slabtown float cause there would be less people. now which of these floats if any fish better? SG
Al Agnew Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Whichever one appears to have fewer people that day...really, there isn't a whole lot of difference in the fishing on those stretches. Just keep in mind that the Mason to Slabtown float is also kinda slow, and 9 or 10 miles might be a long way to go in a day...unless you're like me. The last time I floated it I floated from Boiling Spring to Slabtown in one day!
