Members Weather Watcher Posted May 30, 2013 Members Posted May 30, 2013 I'm planning a camping trip to Montauk/Current next week (T-Th), but am concerned about the rain forecast this weekend.. Forecast is currently suggesting 2-4" with up to 6" locally in the area by Saturday. From your experience, will the river be fishable by Tuesday?
jah Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 The Current is running at 200 CFS now, which is very fish-able, but still moving quite a bit. If they get 4" of rain, I highly doubt it'll be fish-able Tuesday, unfortunately. Those are my two cents, but others will chime in and give you their thoughts.
Members jgentile Posted May 30, 2013 Members Posted May 30, 2013 I will wade the upper Current at a discharge rate of 300 cfs tops as long as I have a wading staff. At that rate the river is pushing pretty hard.
Gavin Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 It hasnt rained down there in awhile...I wouldnt worry about it.
Nortrad Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 The Current drops very quickly. I've read some people do very well when it's raining/rising especially, not so good after it has risen and held high. Hard to gauge this rain period coming up, looks like a lot.
Al Agnew Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Yeah, the best you can do is watch the gauge, and make a final decision as late as possible. The Current can be "fishable" very soon after a big rain, because it clears quickly to a point where you can catch fish. But being wadeable is another question. I agree with jgentile, I'd make 300 cfs the upper limit of whether I'd try to wade it or not.
Members Weather Watcher Posted May 30, 2013 Author Members Posted May 30, 2013 Great info and advice, guys. Thank you. I'll watch the weather and river height/flow, and pull the trigger on Sunday. Appreciate the help.
