bigredbirdfan Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 With current rainfall can a jon boat float SAFELY on this stretch without excessive dragging and/or paddling? I prefer to use this on two day floats bc it holds more camping gear than my canoe.
sean c Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I've done Hammond down in my driftboat at 750 cfs it was no problem at those flows but I doubt I would do it again at less than About 500.Haven't done twin bridges to Hammond I'm guessing its a much different river being above the springs.
bigredbirdfan Posted June 17, 2013 Author Posted June 17, 2013 Looks like Hebron the Sunburst and probably in a canoe unless someone can confirm a jon boat to be ok for this trip. In regards to fishing gear I plan on brings two spinning rods. One for small mouth fishing with braided line and 10 lb fluorocarbon leader and one with 4 lb green mono for jig fishing in trout water and possibly a third just like the first so I don't have to switch baits. In soft plastics should I bring brush hogs, baby brush hogs, 3 inch gurbs and what colors of those should I bring? I guess I should also bring rebel craws and/or stand up jigs with crawdad trailers? What color of these? Are road runners effective and what color head and body are best? Should we throw top waters? In the zig jigs what colors other than sculpin are effective in the trout section of this river? Our fishing gear space will most likely be consumed with overnight camping gear so I'm trying to bring less than more. Any advice is appreciated and if anyone doesn't want to reveal the answers about any of these questions publicly feel free to send PM. Thanks
Gavin Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Think you have a great selection for smallies...I would definetly try some top water...Small walkers and poppers like the Spook Jr., Cultiva Zip n Ziggy, Zell Pop R, LC G Splash work well on spin tackle. But use a mono leader instead of flouro. I usually toss flies in the trout water but you could try some jigs, cranks, floating & suspending jerkbaits that mimic the forage in the river. Black & Brown stoneflies in the 3/4"-1.25" range, Tan Crawfish in the 1.5-2" range...Olive Craws in the 2-4" range...Dusky Stripe Shiners and Central Rollers in the 3-5" range. Hope you have a great trip.
