Members vandelay Posted July 1, 2013 Members Posted July 1, 2013 I've fly fished Bennett many times and want to get out of the park and away from the crowds. I'm heading down there this weekend. Where are the best access points to wade fish the Niangua downstream from Bennett? It looks like the Barclay Conservation Area offers a few points to the river. The Bennett access point out of the park by the Hwy 64 bridge looks decent too. Does anyone have any good recommendations out there? Thanks!
dennis boatman Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Bennett Access is great wading, but this time of year on weekends it gets busy...it has about a 1/4 mile of easily wadeable water. Barclay has less fishable water, but there is one good run just upstream from the parking lot...it's always better in the cooler weather...from my experience, the fish don't mind the floaters as long as they are just paddling and floating and not frothing up the water...I may go down tomorrow and report back... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Aaron J Scott Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 If I want to get up to the Niangua to wet-wade for trout in the summer, I go up to Barclay in the morning, fish until the floaters start coming in (around lunchtime), then hop in the car and drive up to the 64 access and fish till I get tired and/or annoyed. Save Scratch, Raise Cash. Fish Itch!

dennis boatman Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 ...went this morning...water was perfect...caught 2 at the Hwy. 64 access and 2 more at Barclay...it wasn't easy... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
podum Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 There is some good wadable water at NRO (it's between Bennett and Barclay) - especially downstream. I think they charge a nominal (less than $5) if you want to fish for the day and you aren't camping or renting. Barclay and Bennett are also fine. There is another riffle downstream of the parking lot at Barclay, but it takes some effort to get there. Worth it, though. There is a spring down there that helps congregate fish in the summer. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
oneshot Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 ...went this morning...water was perfect...caught 2 at the Hwy. 64 access and 2 more at Barclay...it wasn't easy...Went this morning caught two small ones but yesterday I caught my Limit of Good size ones, cleaned them right at the hole.I seen where Otters had been there,I think they found my cleanings and pushed the Trout out of there. The river is dropping and clear.I catch fish at 64 or Barclay even with Canoes. Good wadding,64 HWY all the way down past the Concrete Ramp, don't wade on side of Concrete Ramp there is a hole just past the ramp,(Woman drowned in this hole after she fell in and her Wadders filled, held her down) to a Small Island. Barclay up stream there is a Good riffle hang to the West side to the Big Root Wad,after that there is a Hole there. If you turn to the Left driving in instead of right, park at the Gate, walk towards Shed, hang a Left (North)follow the Fence Line it runs along a spring, fish where spring goes into the river, last time I fished there I caught Rainbows but caught some nice Browns. oneshot
dennis boatman Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I've been down there, but never any luck...but it's a nice walk and pretty water...I'm liking the Barclay area more and more...especially in the winter months...less snakey... A strike indicator is just a bobber...

Bill B. Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Water moccasins are bad around Barclay...timber rattlers, too. Big snakes, 6 feet long and longer. Cold-eyed, deadly reptiles that slither up behind people without making a sound. Don't go to Barclay if serpents bother you.
