Members minnesotawalleyeguy Posted July 14, 2013 Members Posted July 14, 2013 Being from Minnesota originally id never heard of using lights to fish after dark but living in MO now ive heard stories of people being very successful at it and am curious to try it. Does anybody hav any pointers on how to do this? The stories ive heard usually involve fishing under bridges,is this accurate? Thinkin bout headin over thursday evening and trying my luck at it. Ive got two lights 1 green 1 that goes in the water and 1 normal 1 that floats on the surface facing down. Shud i use 1 or both? Any pointers wud b appreciated!
Members Crappie Catcher Posted July 15, 2013 Members Posted July 15, 2013 I use two of each just find some fish before dark and set up I have a few spots that usually always produce so I don't usually get there till dark. Seems like all my good spots are open coves I've never had any luck in timber but I know lots of people have. I usually do good at it but seems like this year is pretty tough .
Members MN Viking Posted July 15, 2013 Members Posted July 15, 2013 mneyeguy this is a whole new game for me also being from mn myself. Been out a couple times this year at night fishing with lights. Buddies I go with are from around here so they had been doing this for some time. We sure haven't set the world on fire and like Crappie Cather said it has been tough. What part of MN are you from?

I think it really helps if you find the baitfish and predator fish before dark and then set up in that area. I like a lot of main lake points. I usually cruise 5-10 of them in the area I want to fish, see which one has the most activity and then set up there. It can be a little difficult to get solidly anchored at Stockton so I usually wait until the forecast is for light wind. I also dont like doing it with a bright moon. either new moon, late rising moon, or cloud cover seems to be the best for me.

Old plug Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 A lot of the success with lights is the waters around them and what's under those waters. In Missouri you are not allowed to submerge a light. A lot if pople plant brush here on the lake and put lights on the dock pointing into the water above the brush. I am not sure that is better than just turning on the dock ceiling lights. With the creation of the new low wattage draw lights a 100 watt bulb only draws 25 or 26 watts. I have 6 of them on my dock and can control them in 3 separate groups. They do draw a billion bugs. But I can turn on 2 on one side and go stand I the dark on the other side. It has been my experience that I catch most if my fish at the edge of where light turns to darkness.

zarraspook Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 OLD PLUG -- you stated " In Missouri you are not allowed to submerge a light. ".... I don't know where you got this info but the MDC website http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/regulations/general-fishing-rules/general-fishing-methods says :: """" Use of Lights As an aid to fishing methods, an artificial light may be used only above the water surface. However, while fishing by pole and line only, underwater lights may be used to attract fish. New! Underwater lights also may be used when bowfishing on lakes, ponds and other impoundments.
