timsfly Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 The flood last week hit the river pretty hard, evacuating a large portion of the campgrounds, everything should be back up and running by Thursday. The river came up about 9' and is now back to about where it was before the flood. The river is actually in pretty good condtion, the water has that greenish look right now, and will have for a few weeks probabaly, so the dry fly fishing will slowly come back, but right now we are fishing dark woolybuggers, prince nymphs, copper johns, lightning bugs, small gold jigs, small thread jigs, brassies, large drys will take a few here and there, the fish are still reacting to a hopper or a beetle, in some areas, where there is a bit of slow water, Y2K bugs are working pretty good, as are the glo-balls and the san juan worms, in bright orange and red. I'm tying a lot of buggers right now with extra mylar in the tails so they are more noticeable in this murky water. 5X and 6X are good to use right now. The water is still up a bit and the use of power bait is recommended if you just want to catch a fast limit of trout, the orange, flo. yellow and the white are all good in the eggs, if you are using the worms, the orange peel, the orange, cheese yellow and the chartruse are all working. Small gold spoons are really good if you fish them deep and slow, small spinners still work fine, you may need to add a bit of lead to get them down deep enough. Jigs are catching fish, right now, 1/32 and larger are best, but a few people have been catching trout on the white and the olive micro jig, but larger jigs are working best, in the darker colors, olive, black, black/yellow and dk brown have all been working well. In this type of water the use of 4lb and 3lb line is recommended, and as the water clears, we will go back to the 2lb line. If you go into zone 3, night crawlers and minnows would be good choices, or any of the bright colored power baits should work, and of course the ole local favorite, whole kernel corn. Members Tommy Neil Posted August 15, 2013 Members Posted August 15, 2013 I went this morning and caught a lot of fish. I used eggs in zone 1 with 14 hooks and 2 lb line. They started dredging in pool number one and it was muddy water for sure. I guess they are getting ready for kids day on Sat.
Jeff Tief Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Wife Susie and I fished late Wed. thru Fri. afternoon and caught some nice rainbows to go along with the regular stockers.Fished Thursday for 4 hours and caught 5 bows from 3 1/2 to 6# .Four came from zone 1 section and 1 in the c&r. Fished again Friday about 4 hours with the heat and saw several more big fish besides the ones we released but didn't fool any of them.Water was in excellent shape and we left before the weekend Holiday crowd.
laker67 Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Five lunkers, in the trout park, and in the month of august. Can anyone else top that? I would say not. Congrats to you and wife Suzie.

Members Tommy Neil Posted September 11, 2013 Members Posted September 11, 2013 Impressive for sure. Wish I could just catch one. Jeff Tief Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Tommy, sometimes it is by chance that you just have that type of day and sometimes it seems you can't do any thing wrong.(Then again we have days when I don't seem to do anything right).Think there had been a Kids Day a week or two earlier and these could have been some leftovers from that event.Normally if you go to target big fish you walk a little more and sacrifice #s of fish for a big fish or two. Cooler fall weather and trout derbies in the trout parks will add to your chance of catching big fish if you get the time to go.Good luck to you.
Members Tommy Neil Posted September 12, 2013 Members Posted September 12, 2013 My 8 year old grandson caught a three and half one at the Kid's Day. I can't walk well so I set in a canvas chair and fish. I catch lots of trout but not a big old gooden. I was there Tuesday and was told about a really large fish in the first hole that wouldn't bite anything they presented to him on Monday Since school started I fish Roaring River twice a week and love it.
