Members Krisopp Posted August 12, 2013 Members Posted August 12, 2013 I'll be making my first trip to the LIR soon and was just looking for some advice on fishing it. I am very new to fly fishing. What are some must have flies that I should bring? Wheres a good place to start fishing? Are there any dangers to the river that i need to be aware of? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Nick Williams Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Check the river levels before you go! - Nick
Members okiebug Posted August 12, 2013 Members Posted August 12, 2013 You'll want to fish at watts parking lot, or below the dam. I fished the lower end a few weeks ago and it fished poorly. As far as flies go you'll need some zebra midges (black, olive, pale yellow have worked the best for me), cracklebacks, copper johns, and hair and coppers all work good. If you don't mind slinging junk flies (I don't mind) micro jigs can be deadly. You will want to watch the release schedule to make sure you don't show up when they are releasing water. If you hear the horns sound when your on the river its means they 'may' be releasing water so keep an eye on the water level. You don't want to get caught on the wrong side of the river when it comes up. here is a link to the release schedule: http://www.swt-wc.usace.army.mil/power/hydropower.html
JCWolfe Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Right now I would be leary of the generation schedule with the inflow going into Tenkiller. They may not follow the schedule. You're picking a tough time to fish for your first trip. Fishing has been slow to okay at times. Good luck. Okiemountaineer
