ruthead Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 As I'm still a newcomer to fishing Taney(you can count the times we've fished there on both hands) I'm still working on building up my Taneycomo fly collections. We'll be down there next weekend and would like some help on what flies to make sure we have. Gonna do some tyin this weekend. Got 4 in the family so I try(need) to take a wide variety. Thanks for everyone's help and input on this forum. The great wealth of knowledge available here has drastically sped up the learning curve on the now going on 20 year long road of learning to fly fish. M.I.Z.....Z.O.U!!!! Members BassHunter132 Posted November 22, 2013 Members Posted November 22, 2013 Midges, Scuds, Eggs, San Juan, Mohair Leeches, and Woolies would be a good box for Taney. I personally would start with a size 18 rusty or rusty dun midge under a palsa indicator and see what that gets you.
XP 590 Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Don't forget soft hackles. I'm not much with dry flies, but in the early evenings, when I hear the water bubbling, I start swinging soft hackles of all sizes and shapes. Probably do best on #14 and #16, browns, grey, purple and orange. Experience, and alot of reading has taught me when I see all that surface activity, alot of is is actually subsurface, sipping bugs in the film or just under. The only tough part when the water is low is finding spots with enough current to get a good swing. Hang on because the hits can be hard.
Geoff Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 I was also thinking of making this type of thread. I'll be there next weekend as well. I plan to chuck some big meat and use tiny flies. I just want to catch a dang brown!!!! "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."

Members BassHunter132 Posted November 23, 2013 Members Posted November 23, 2013 Good call on the soft hackles. As far as patterns I like rusty dun with a copper tungsten bead and copper wire for midges. Size 18. Grey or tan on scuds. Pink on the San Juan's. Green or ginger on the leeches and buggers. And miracle fly for the eggs. Also forgot to mention black micro jigs. They are a good winter pattern just swing them or drift them under an indicator.
duckydoty Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Pine squirrel sculpins in black, olive, and the chartreuse along with white mink sculpins are my go to flies on Taney both day and night. Very simple flies to tie on a size 10 3x long streamer hook with a 5/32 bead. Just leave about a 3/4 in tail and palmer the rest up to the bead. White chammy worms and white mega worms to go with the san juan worms. 3 shades of grey sow bugs in 4 sizes ( 18, 16, 14, and 12's). rusty midges, zebra midges, prim rose and pearl midges, and a solid black midge with black nickel beads all in size 18's, 16's and 14's. Red, black and olive soft hackles and some crackle backs and egg patterns. If you can't catch fish on Taney with that selection, there aint no fish in there. Wayne SW/MO Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 If you like fishing dries you need some Griffiths Gnats. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
