I'd totally get an Allen reel. I own 8 of them. I even own this very same model rod with an Allen reel on it. I've yet to find a fish that can properly outrun the reel.

I am not sold on that one way bearing found in those and many other reels. If it isn't totally 100% sealed, a guy going to Michigan could be risking his first or second ever landed steelhead because there was some sand in the bearing which caused it to slip-spin.

Allen does have a new reel out called the Kraken priced around $200 with a sealed drag... but I doubt it would have a dog style clutch like this or this or this :

To each his own... but you can't bring a knife to gunfight.

Me, I would rather know I have a proven fly reel, like the original Harris Solitude mentioned, for those steelies. (But that reel cannot be changed from right to left hand retrieve.... what a design flaw if you ask me).

Allen are a very good reel in cold weather. Took mine out last weekend. With ice all over my rod thought I was in for trouble with my reel but landed several with no drag issues at all. I would put them up against reels that cost three times a much. And they did just release the Kraken XLA reel you should give it a look.

I have a Kraken. Its been in the salt a bunch of times. No issues what so ever with it. I own only lamson and Allen reels, and the Allen drags will tighen completely, stopping the spools. the lamson's wont freeze the spools. I doubt you'll find a better reel for that price.

I took a look at the Allen Kraken model reel. The sealed drag is nice and it has a good price point. Anyone know what their warranty is? I didn't see it on their website.

Their warranty is if its breaks, they fix or replace....pretty much for as long as you own the dang thing. And I have also seen where if its something they don't make anymore and it fails bad, they send you brand new model. I doubt you'll need to use the warranty, I just bought another one today. So now Im up to 9 :D
