Jeremy Hunt Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Fishing as been extremely good at Taney. The trout aren’t too picky right now and everybody seems to have their rods bent. I have been fishing egg patterns and some midges at the end of the day. I have been spending a lot of my time down by the boat ramp and floating all the way to lookout hole. Over the last few days we must have caught over two hundred fish and five or six really nice browns and one really nice rainbow. Nothing over twenty two inches and I would say most of them were eighteen to twenty. All caught on egg flies. We did catch some fish on zebra midges in black, but nothing of any size. That’s why I’m sticking to the egg bite right now. Here lately I’ve been catching something big every time I fish this fly. We all have those days when we want to fish the same fly all day because it is working so well you don’t want to switch it. It really doesn’t matter what you throw, all I can say is take advantage of this and get down there and fish. You won’t be disappointed I promise. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 10, 2006 Root Admin Posted December 10, 2006 How are you fishing your egg flies? Water running? Are you in a boat or wading?
Danoinark Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Jeremy What color and size egg and are you fishing them weighted and or with shot? Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Jeremy Hunt Posted December 10, 2006 Author Posted December 10, 2006 If you have read my reports I have been writing about this fly for the past month. It kind of all started with the whole Roaring River thing. I finally asked Tim who owns the fly shop at Roaring River how to fish eggs at Taney because I have seen him fish these below chute two in the calm water and catch fish after fish. That got me thinking about the whole egg thing. Trout relate to food the way they see it. You have to remember that trout are raised seeing food fall to them. I think they will always remember that so it makes since to me to fish eggs on the fall. I have never fooled with eggs until opening day this year at roaring. I figured out how to fish them there and was wondering if this same technique would apply at Taney. It took me a while to figure out the color. I found out real quick that it takes a certain jig head weight to make this egg role right on the bottom. That is real important when fishing eggs. I think presentation is the key for sure. Even the way I cast it out to make the fly role right. It all has to make since to the fish and how they see it. I was just reading a report on here and they were even talking about catching browns and eggs were falling out. Their not done eating eggs and because it is so loud and they can see it from far away is the only reason why I am hooking so many fish on it right now. I am fishing the egg out of my boat with the water off. And sometimes I would throw this in dead still water and they would hit it on the fall. It could barely role and they would hit it. The color that has been working the best is a yellow glo-yarn with a red dot on the top. I am tying all these on a 1/100 jig head hook with the head painted orange or a pinkish color. timsfly Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Glad those eggs are working out for you. We are just tearing them up over here at the park on apricot and lt. roe with a red dot. I have been doing best on # 18's, but I caught 2 on friday with the jig head glo-bugs, and both were nice, one was 5lbs and the other just a little over 6, and I caught these in the same hole in about 15 minutes of fishing, and the eggs had to be right on the bottom rolling in the current, it was fun watching the fish take the eggs. Oh I have a 1000 more of the jig heads comming in a few days. Holler when you need more. LostMyWife Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Can you post a picture of the eggs you are using? Yes, I'm That Guy
timsfly Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Here are a few of the egg patterns that I use, but remember lots of color combos work, in real dirty water bright orange or chartruse will sometimes work very well. bear with me I'm trying to upload some pics, I'm not getting it done very fast Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
timsfly Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Thank you Phil, I hope this helps you guys with the colors and sizes I'm using. I tie on 1/100th ounce jig heads and sometime when fishing deep or in real fast water I use the 1/80th ounce size. Don Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Tim's eggs are great, He has always been helpful about what's working at RR and taney every time I've been to his shop; and what a selection he has to offer in flies and materials. I got an 8+ pounder to the net last week on one of his roe colored small eggs. I tried some at Taney today, but no takers. Probably lack of presentation skills. I did well on my own pattern, approx 15 on my egg cluster in a yellow green color. Majority of takers were when it had settled still on the bottom. Most were caught below the narrows below rebar as it opened up to the big hole. I'll have to show you guys how I tie it when I get down New Year's day. Caught several more on a variety of scuds. Had a good one about 4:30. Was a good fight and I netted a 20-22 in. bow. Took it near the bank to take a pic while I was so excited. While unhooking, I found out it was fouled under the belly. I wish I realized earlier, I would have broke it off. Biggest of the day was 16 in bow. No browns. Not that crowded down there as well. Good afternoon to fish. Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
