Members fisheye Posted March 25, 2014 Members Posted March 25, 2014 All, Have a chance to run away from home this weekend and I want to go where I have never fished before. I always wanted to try to wade fish where Big Spring enters the Current. I want to fish from the east side of the river, Big Spring enters on the west side of the river. Looking at Google Maps I can see that there is some sort of boat ramp at the Big Spring Camp ground area on the west side of the river. My question is that can you wade across the Current River above the Big Spring confluence at the boat ramp to the east side of the Current River and wade down to the confluence? Is the water to deep in this section of the river to wade across? Thanks
jdmidwest Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Too deep and too swift. They may even prohibit fishing in the spring branch if I remember right. Why would you want to? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Members dtbrake Posted March 29, 2014 Members Posted March 29, 2014 i dont think he is talking about fishin the spring branch just where it meets the current. i can not think of a place i would rather fish if i could only hit one hole. i have caught a ton of good smallies in this little stretch. we usually put in at big spring and float down river so this is one of the first stopping points and always the last. good luck if u do try and wade it. the water is swift but during the summer months you more then likely will be able to make it across to the east side. have only been through there once this year and the water was up so not sure how the winter changed the river this yet.
Al Agnew Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Yeah, I think you could get across the river above the mouth of the spring in lower summer water levels. Forget about it in higher or colder water, though. I'm not exactly sure how easy it would be to fish effectively once you got across, though. The pool just below the spring gets pretty wide and in some places is fairly deep even close to the other side. I've fished it a couple of times in the dead of winter for an hour or so just by taking the trail along the river below the spring and dropping off the trail in strategic spots to fish something like a hair jig. Caught some fish that way, too. My wife has a friend who lives not too far away and she loves Big Spring, so we sometimes drive down and Mary meets with her friend and hikes while I fish.
