Goin the 1st week of May so prolly early for the hopper bite. May opt for renting a boat one day, I know we're not there at the best time but it's what we have got to work with. Decided to stay at Rim Shoals Resort. Now tryin to plan where to fish from there and what I need to tie up for that time of the year.

I would tie up some elk hair caddis- or whatever your favorite caddis pattern is. I usually use a size 18 EHC. Also caddis-ish nymphs. I did really well with a dark green midge with a black tungsten bead- size 16- I think they took it for a caddis larva. You are right- too early for hoppers. Caddis dries on high water can be a blast in the spring though- if you catch the right conditions.

If your son wants a big brown trout on the White, hope for generation, then, put down the fly rod, pick up a spinning rod with at least 8 pound test, and throw big (BIG) jerkbaits.

Yes, chucking big lures, on a big river, is not glamorous. It is not Montana.

But, your choice. Laugh with the sinners or cry with the saints.

And we know who the saints are. They will be the guys with a fly rod in their hand, pounding away at the same fast water holes.

But. But.

As always. Your choice. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Fishing is it.

Son likes to do it his own way so he'll probably have the fly rod in hand. never know though. he may look at it as his last chance for a while with college starting this fall. It's his choice.

Stripping the right streamer at night in the quiet back waters is the best chance. There are many others that know this better than me, but this takes a lot of patience and stealth. He can't go stomping around and start fishing right away with an LED light flashing. You have to get into an area turn off the lights and let it calm down, then cast and strip occasionally. He can't pound the water. Good scouting during the day is the best. Try to find shallow mud flat type backwaters. If you are staying between Cotter and the Dam, PM me, I have some areas he can try. This could really lead to nothing or all the way to fish of a lifetime...of course every cast is like that!

We've been nightimin a couple times at Taney and will try it on the White as well. Probably be our best bet for a wading brown. Son spends a lot of hours in a treestand bowhunting every year so he knows it can be a fat 0 or a great experience. PM sent.
