dennis boatman Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Interesting that you caught a "small" Brown...I caught 1 a few weeks ago. Did they do some brown stocking? I was thinking they hadn't stocked since about 2012... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I was told last fall by a hatchery employee that they are stocking once a year, late summer early fall. This happened at the ramp while they were stocking some 'bows so I assume it was good information? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
podum Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 I was down three weeks back and caught 5 small browns (10-12 inches) at Barclay. Encouraging if they can avoid the people who don't know the difference or don't care. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
oneshot Posted April 6, 2014 Author Posted April 6, 2014 Funny you mention this because I have seen people not know the difference between Browns and Rainbows. There is places on the river I wish they would release them that people don't walk and most people don't fish from Boat but they could still get Truck in there. Some body New has been coming into Barclay lately regular trashing it. Chopping Live Trees and leaving Fishing Line along the bank.. I know this is Public Land but some people are just worse than others. oneshot
podum Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I got tangled up in some braid while wading at Barclay. Heard chainsaws all morning. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
GloryDaze Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Good to meet you Oneshot- we had a nice float down to Lead Mine and took out this morning. Fishing was poor Friday afternoon as I expected. It got Cold that night as I had ice on my tent Saturday morning. Saturday the fishing warmed up with the weather... slow and low seemed to be the ticket for lure selection and presentation. I caught the biggest smallie and it was right at 14" The water was a good level, any lower we would have spent a lot of time dragging and dodging strainers. We didn't see any other floaters so all in all a great trip. Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory
Goggle-Eyed Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 The water was a good level, any lower we would have spent a lot of time dragging and dodging strainers. We didn't see any other floaters so all in all a great trip. That is surprising based on the gauge levels. it looks like it was still running at over 450CFS when you guys got off the water. I always figure anything over 300 is good to go... Glad you caught some fish and glad you didn't see anyone else, just one of the reasons I love the Niangua and that float! Joe
Goggle-Eyed Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 How was the river from Lead Mine up to Blue Springs? Was there anything that looked really hairy at the water levels you were floating? I usually take the Jet Jon from Lead Mine up to there until the river gets below 300-350CFS. Any major blockages? Thanks, Joe
GloryDaze Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I'm not real sure what is considered too much blockage for a jet boat but there are 2 spots I can think of: By the way I could maneuver my canoe through them, so I didn't have to portage they just had some narrow chutes. First one is literally just above lead mine when going upstream from leadmine it is the first section where you would turn left. Second there was a real tricky spot about 1/4 mile downstream from where the signs start getting posted for the leadmine conservation area. Surprisingly, the majority of the rain must have hit the mid to lower section of the river. By the time we put on Friday night, Linda from the outfitter said she thought the river was a few inches high. Honestly I was surprised as well, I anticipated it being high and muddy but it wasn't.
