Members stitch Posted April 25, 2014 Members Posted April 25, 2014 Ok, we got our place down there bought, and I got permission on some decent looking ground thats within walking distance. If I have time either way early or after I fill my Iowa tag Im gonna come down and bow hunt. What should I expect? I dont shoot little bucks, but Im not near as picky as some. I pretty much shoot for 140 or bigger. Are there many deer like that around? Also, when would you guys say "peak" rut is in general? I KNOW thats a loaded question, but ballpark on an average year? My favorite day to hunt up here is November 12th. Thanks.
Lancer09 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 The peak rut is usually right around opening of rifle season. Don't expected many bucks walking around that would go 140 especially of your hunting public land. Best bet would be to get away from the easy to access spots if possible.
Members stitch Posted April 27, 2014 Author Members Posted April 27, 2014 I'll be hunting private ground. I will also PROBABLY not be hunting the rut in MO, unless I tag out early here in Iowa. Your archery season opens two weeks before ours does, so I plan to come down for a few days in late September and hopefully find some deer that are still on their summer feeding patterns. Are there really not many deer over 140 around there?
Lancer09 Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 No. I'm sure there are some, but if you hold out for a 140 you May have some real slim pickings.
Bird Watcher Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 You'll find that acorn fed Ozark deer are quite a bit different than Iowa farm ground bucks. a 140 might be the deer of a lifetime for a lot of hunters around Warsaw.

Members stitch Posted April 28, 2014 Author Members Posted April 28, 2014 So for you guys that are pickier (by that I mean you try and shoot "mature" deer), what do you look for? If I see a 120-135 should I be shooting? I will have limited time to hunt down there.

I will have limited time to hunt down there. 140's should be out there, I'm deep in the southern Missouri ozarks where I would think the deer would be even smaller. There are plenty of 140's around, but because of the timber you really must put in some time and effort to see them. I'm amazed at the trail cam pictures that come from my area, talking 160's to 180's not that uncommon, but these deer are seldom shot, and rarely seen. I don't shoot smaller bucks, but it is all personal preference, if I see a 130 and I like it, no shame in taking it. I usually let them walk because I'd just as soon have a doe as a set of mediocre antlers, if I shoot a buck it will be a wall hanger, but at age 40 I only have 2 on the wall.
