Hello, caught this fish over the weekend but unsure as to why it lacks the normal Bluegill ear flap.

Yes it's a sunfish, same as a largemouth, crappie, longear or bluegill. He is asking why it doesn't have the elongated ear flap. There could be any number of reasons from predation to a birth defect.

You can see where the flap used to be.

It looks torn to me. any pictures with the gill cover "open"???

That green fuzzy where the flap used to be looks fungal.
