SilverMallard Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 In case anyone wants to know, here's what I learned from the woman who owns the concessions at Montauk SP this week: 1. Park is only open Fri-Mon during C&R season for fishing, restaurant, stores, etc. 2. Lodging and camping are open 365 days/year. 3. Water in campground is on/off depending on weather during the winter months. 4. If you call for reservations/info during the week, you probably will have to leave a message and wait until Friday for a return call...which is too late to make plans. And then you get this story about how she lives 40 miles from the park and it's really inconveniencing her to operate this MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR STATE CONCESSION 4 days/week from her home 40 miles away. Poor baby! My heart bleeds for her. And I am so sorry to have inconvenienced her by trying to give her my money. P.S. This was the result of a thread on the Current River board, where the days/week the park was open in the winter was somewhat in dispute. jdmidwest Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Well, If you don't like the way they run things around there, the contract is open for bids every so many years. They are private business owners that bid on the contract. If the park were open to fishing all week, it may become worthwile to keep it open all week. Otherwise, I think they do a fine job at the lodge. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

Otherwise, I think they do a fine job at the lodge. I have no problem with the Friday thru Monday thing. Makes good sense to me. But you would think that would make Thursdays an important day to answer the lodging reservation and info phones and return calls promptly. I have more experience at that level and higher in the hospitality industry than they do. The late response caused us to cancel our trip for this weekend. That cost them money in their slow time of year. Duh! Besides, lodging is open 365 days/year. So your point is moot for the lodging reservations phone line. I am well aware that the concession is bid on periodically. I fail to see what that has to do with giving other anglers who might want to go down there a heads up to call WAY in advance. jjtroutbum Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I have heard of a great service offerd by the local tele phone co. its called call forrwarding or maybe even voice mail that the proprieter could check remotely several times a day if they could be so "bothered" Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. There are about a dozen ways I can think of to solve this problem very inexpensively. Surely, if they caught one more reservation per week in the winter, most of these options would pay for themselves. 3wt Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I would try the online system. As online reservations go, they kind of suck (but I think they upgraded last fall). But, I've had good luck, and you don't have to worry about business hours or dealing with less than helpful people. Don't get too down on Montauk. It's very much worth your time for a winter trip. I think I led you astray with the open on Thursday comment, so sorry about that.
Members Watcher Posted January 11, 2007 Members Posted January 11, 2007 Just call up Reeds Cabins they will be happy to help you out, and at a lower price, better tackle. 573-548-2222. Now wheres the problem that would keep anyone from going down and enjoying the fishing, anytime?
jjtroutbum Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 Does'nt the on-line MDC sight charge a fee for using its services. I know that they do if you try to use the service by phone it wasnt much but even 5 bucks to to expensive for a public/government agency to charge over and above the fees for there camp sites at least in my opinion... 3wt Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 I think only the normal reservation fee. You can only avoid it if you just show up and something happens to be available (good luck)
