JohnF52 Posted August 18, 2014 Author Posted August 18, 2014 Most of the BOC fishermen say release anything over about 10 pounds to spawn again. A 10 pound catfish is several years old.
Members Kyle R Posted August 19, 2014 Members Posted August 19, 2014 I personally release all of my catfish. They're a pain to clean, and I can never make them taste as good as the catfish restaurants do.
JohnF52 Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 In my experience, most catfish restaurants have their filets cut very thin, so you end up with half fried batter on your plate. Profit margin is higher when selling corn meal and grease.

I don't think I ever had channel cat in a regular cafe/restaurant that wasn't cornmeal dipped and that is thin. Can't speak for one serving that Asian stuff. If they don't gurantee me it's farm raised cat from here, they ain't serving it to me. Technically only American catfish can be sold as just catfish in this country, but I suppose no one is checking every food place. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Im with John, they seem very thin and over battered, either that or they are the smallest catfish on the planet because even 1lb cats I catch have more meat on them. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
kwall Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 You'all are making me hungry , I personally throw back all the channels and keep the blues when I'm fishing for walleyes -- those out of a clean lake like Beaver are good eating , the ones that I can just barely reach my hand around are perfect , I fillet'em and deep or skillet fry , just as good as any eatin' place I've been to
