Bill Butts
Here is a description of the new regs that affect the Beaver Tailwater, found on the fishing report from McLellan's Fly Shop: New regulations go into effect on Beaver Tailwater this Sunday, January 1st. The entire length of the tailwater, which now extends to Houseman access, will be under a 13-16 inch slot limit. Anglers will be allowed to keep five trout of any species under 13 inches, or four under 13 plus one over 16. Barbless hooks are required along the entire tailwater, even for baitfishers. The current catch-and-release area will become an artificials-only section. The slot limit will be in effect through this area (not catch-and-release). Guest flyfishBDS
Hey Butts, those bozos at McLellan's wouldn't know a reg change if it leapt up and bit them on the butt And you can tell them I said so. Actually they are very very good mates of mine, so I can say crap like that, but a couple of little errors in that report. I posted the full reg changes in the Dam Store Report post last week Reg Changes The whole river is going to be barbless for bait fishers only. Barbed trebles and fly hooks will be legal outside the new "No-bait zone" The current catch and release area will become an artificals only "no bait zone" single barbless artificials allowed. Fish can be taken in this area according to the slot limit rules. Chumming still banned. It appears that dropper rigs will also be outlawed as per existing rules in this area. Slot limit as above. In their defence F&G has done a very poor job in publicity for these changes. They have got all excited about the Little red management plan now and Beaver is the poor cousin once again. Thje fact that some rules are fluid hasn't helped people get it right and amazing amounts of misinformation about. I had guys trying to tell me this morning in the store that bait fishing was banned _ crazy stuff. Anyway hope it helps. BTW the Midge hatches have been great, some very nice fish up eating dries at present Cheers Steve Direct from the AGFC 1. 13-16 inch slot limit goes into effect for all trout Jan. 1, 06. All trout between 13-16 inches must be released. Immediately. 2. Daily creel limits remains at 5. Only one trout may be over 16 inches. 3. Single barbless hook restriction on bait fishing although bait holder barbs are allowed. 4. From the Dam to Houseman, possession of trout within the slot limit will not be allowed. 5. The Current C&R area is converted to a "no-bait" zone where only single barbless artificial lures may be used. Chumming not allowed. Slot limit applies here as well. 6. Trout permit required from Beaver Dam to Houseman or to retain any trout in any state waters. 7. Other statewide regulations are unchanged from state regulations. I got turned onto this site by Steve over yonder at the Dam Store today, and I thought I would drop some info in here. I was fishing this afternoon below the top of the 'Catch and Release area' and was watching these two guys bait fishing. So was the game warden. I saw him put down his binocs and make his way down to these two guys. Long story short from across the river, he wrote a ticket for 205 bucks, letting a few things go so the guy still had cigarette money. I heard him say he could have written it for somewhere in the 600 dollar range; I was sort of eavesdropping at this point, so I am not sure of the exact 'could have been total'. Then the game warden checked everyone else below the sign in the "Catch and Release" area and wrote another guy a ticket. Needless to say the fishing pressure soon eased up tremendously. He asked me how I was doing and I told him just fine. I guess since I was across the river on the logs, he figured I was nothing he needed to worry about. I made sure I changed a fly and mashed the barb down while he was watching me. I guess my point is this: Today I was griping about what I thought would be a lack of enforcement with the new regulations. I was W-R-O-N-G!!! As usual, my informative session has turned into a babble. The gane warden did escort the one guy up and out of there for one reason or another.
