Terry Beeson Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Many Islands is just upstream from the confluence with Myatt Creek which is about the end of the trout waters. Bayou is quite a bit upstream from MI. Check out mapquest's areal images of the river or google earth. County road 2027 is the road to Bayou Access off Bayou Road. The "main" trout accesses from the spring down are: Dam 1/Mammoth Spring State Park Riverbend Lassiter Cold Springs (boat ramp... not much trout wading) Dam 3 Bayou Access Riverside (private - campground) Spring River Oaks (private - campground) Many Islands (private - campground) IF you can get in, there is some really good fishing just below Spring River Oaks. What are the falls called there, CC? For my money, I fish Bayou, Dam 3, and Lassiter in that order with the best results. Members dubya Posted January 15, 2007 Author Members Posted January 15, 2007 Brian, Much thanks! This is kinda putting the scene together for me. When you fish do you concentrate on the fast moving water, or deeper slow moving holes?
Brian Sloss Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Bayou can be accessed of hwy. 9 leaving Mammoth Srping. To get to the 11 Pt. take 63 N. to the north side of Thayer, MO and pick up 19 N. and go to Alton, MO. My canoe rental is at the second blinking light. If you stop in, I'll direct you to the best fishing spot from there. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Terry Beeson Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Hey Brian... that's good to know. I didn't realize that was your place. Been by there, but never stopped in. Dubya, Both... But seems the deeper pools are a little better most of the time. If you get to Bayou and they are not lined up, start at the upper end at the shoals and work your way down and even around the bend. Good fishing all along that area. At Dam 3, there is a nice pool at the end of the parking lot that sometimes holds a BUNCH of fish. I pulled 30-40 one morning nymphing a spot about 10 ft long and 3 ft wide there. Not all stockers either. Several 15-16s with a couple of 18 inchers. Many spots in the Spring have the "moss" that dots the bottom. Fishing the edges of these can be deadly at times. Then the deeper pools will hold several fish... Honestly, I've not found a "bad" spot to fish the Spring. Members dubya Posted January 16, 2007 Author Members Posted January 16, 2007 All of this talk about trout and the river have sent me over the edge. So, now I'm coming down the 1st week of May to fish while the summer crazies aren't there. I'm still going to make the trip in July as well
Members dubya Posted January 18, 2007 Author Members Posted January 18, 2007 Guys, I wonder if renting a canoe and going from Dam 3 to Many Islands would be a wise approach to fishing the many angles this river presents? I would be able to stop and hit each of the falls and also get in those deeper holes
Terry Beeson Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Yep... But I think if it's just you, I'd opt for a 'yak instead of a canoe... The only problem I see is getting into the fish and looking at your watch to keep track of when you need to leave in order to get back to camp/take out... Kicknbass Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I crossed the spring this past Sunday at AR Hwy 62. It was out of its banks due to all of the rain. I hope you not planning a trip anytime soon. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
Members dubya Posted January 19, 2007 Author Members Posted January 19, 2007 I'm looking at a trip in May and July. I pray the weather cooperates! Can any of you elaborate on how to fish the deeper holes? These areas seem to be the most difficult to figure out. Thank You
Terry Beeson Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Powerbait.... Actually, I like to swing a wooly bugger into those pools and let it sit for a few seconds, then strip it... sometimes slow will work, sometimes jerky and quick works better. At times, just letting it sit works. Depends on the mood of the fish. Bait fishermen will cast powerbait or worms or corn into a pool and take a nap until they get a hit...
