jdmidwest Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Does any on here have any experience with the 300 Blackout? My daughter has shown an interest in deer hunting and I have to build her a rifle. Her size and stature works better with the adjustable stock on the AR platform. I want something with more punch than the .223 and am leaning toward the 300 blackout. It uses 223 brass cut down and reformed, and the only difference is a barrel on the upper. Mags, buffers, receivers are all the same as 223. I would like to hear from others regarding its performance. My understanding is that is has the same characteristics of a 308 win which should be more than enough for deer. Lancer09 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Take a look at the 7mm-08 great little gun with plenty of punch and not much recoil.
jbooth24 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 The guns I used as a kid was 30-30 marlin not much of a recoil and a 243 both good youth guns. I now shoot a 7mm rem mag. My mom shots a youth 30-30 it has a little smaller barrel than most 30-30 and is lighter and they also have youth shells hornedy makes them for youths less of a recoil.
jdmidwest Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 She is not much of a youth, her length of pull on her arm is just short. I had her shoulder up several short carbine bolt action rifles and they did not fit her naturally like the AR does. She did hunt with my Model 7 this year, but when it came time for a shot in the field, she did not shoulder the rifle up right and missed. The 7mm 08 would be an option if I had a AR10 lower. All my lowers are the short action ones on the AR15. That is why I was looking at the 300 blackout, about the same terminal performance of a 308 winchester with the same equipment as the 223. Gatorjet Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Actually, the 300 Blackout ballistics are far from a 308 Winchester. Much closer, or more correctly, identical to the 7.62X39 AK round. You might want to look at the AR platform in 6.8 Remington. Actually a .277 bullet, same as a 270. The 120 grain loading is a couple hundred feet per second faster than the 125 grain 300 Blackout. Producing a little more energy, and add to the increased velocity, a better ballistic coefficient from the smaller diameter it is a flatter shooting round. Real men go propless!
jdmidwest Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Too late. I pulled the trigger on the upper the other day instead of wasting a day in the duck blind. 16" free float heavy barrel with a 3/4 handgaurd. Going to start putting it thru its paces tomorrow if the weather permits. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
