Members Jwd_bassin Posted January 7, 2015 Members Posted January 7, 2015 I have been to Stockton Lake every spring for the last 5 years. In the morning I launch out of the State Park Marina in my old Jon Boat. I try to throw my buzzbaits and frogs on topwater in the morning with no luck. I usually seem to be pretty good with topwater but can't seem to figure Stockton out. Any tips or tricks to figuring Stockton out?
Members 3-Liter Posted January 7, 2015 Members Posted January 7, 2015 "Spring" can mean anytime from Feb to May. Early in the spring, March and early April I like a wiggle wart in craw colors. As water warms and fish move back in pockets many guys throw spinnerbaits. I throw a Biffle Bug on a swing jig head also at that time of the year. One last observation, State park is usually the clearest water on the lake. You may want to put your boat in up one of the creeks or rivers to find more colored water. Good fishing, 3-Liter
Aggressor1988long Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Head up to high point first week of April, I'm 40 and have been fishing the lake for 28 years. Go up in the river, or even head up in maze creek, I usually have a lot of fun fishing a yellow color withholding a 4 blade, it makes more noise and vibration.
Members Jwd_bassin Posted January 8, 2015 Author Members Posted January 8, 2015 Thanks for the tips guys! Maze creek is something I should be able to get to faster and hopefully have some good luck!
Members sixstring531 Posted January 14, 2015 Members Posted January 14, 2015 We've had really good luck with the bullfrog color zara spook, black buzzbait and various poppers. I have a bullfrog colored Pop-R and then a larger blue/silver Bill Dance popper of somekind that has huge rattles in it. DRIVES EM NUTS!
rps Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Despite my avatar, I will not recommend the Top Dollar. It is only for sickos like me that want to work hard. Early top water (before June) requires smaller and smoother baits moving but not that fast. Spook Jr. or mid size Sammy with a rythmic cadence or a jointed Jitter Bug at a medium retrieve. My 2 cents.
Aggressor1988long Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Sounds, like you been around the block I might try that myself.
rps Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 BTW, if the water is really cold, try this. Bagley Bang O Lure or Rapala Floating minnow in the 5 inch range. Throw it to the spot. Let it sit until the rings are gone then twitch it every 10 to 30 seconds.
Flysmallie Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 You are close to some of the best topwater action that lake has to offer. Spent several years of my life up there throwing stuff on top. Your best bet for good action is going to be early. Really early. Spent a couple summers going up every Saturday morning. We would be in our spot before the sun came up and just crush fish until they quit. We were always back home in Springfield by noon. Good times, great memories. I'll message you tomorrow with some spots to check out.
