Leonard Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 The roo bug is a scuds type fly. But what make it stand it is able the change colors (slightly) in water and the legs have more of a lifelike movement.. Roo stands for kangaroo.. the fur from a roo is a tannish/brown wool type fur. this fur is very soft and delicate therefore makes it alittle harder to work with. kangaroo has a mixture of color.. you can 5-10 different types of color mixures from them.. Hook: any scud hook 14-22's thread:8/0 Brown roo fur category: scuds Difficulty:2 (because of the delicate fur) species: Trout Place the hook in the vise and start the thread Add the roo fur by "rolling" it on the thread (may need to wet your fingers a little to get it to roll). Once on the thread start to wrap it toward the eye of the hook. Being very careful not to break apart the line of fur. Make a couple whip finishs and clip the thread Instead of a dubbing brush you will want to use a piece of velco, the fur is so soft a dubbing brush will pull it right off the thread. Clipping the legs.. I like to try to keep the legs just enough to cover the hook.. so when clipping.. clip along the bottom of the hook and across to the eye. (setting your scirrors at the barb and finishing with them touching the eye. You may need to put the bug back into the vise to do a little back and side trimming to smooth them out.. and then add your head cement NOTE: Scud backs may be add if you want to... http://www.taneycomonights.com
Greg Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Is Roo hair pretty widely available? I don't think I've seen it at either the Bass Pro or the fly shop in Springfield. thanks for posting the pattern. I plan to give it a try for sure. For some reason I've never had much luck on scud patterns at Taney. I've caught more than my share - but on thread midges, wooley buggers, and leeches. I think it may be more of a confidence thing. Leonard Posted December 31, 2005 Author Posted December 31, 2005 Greg.. A buddy of mine has the roo hair (a skin)... as far as that.. I never seen anyone else with it... As far as I know no fly shops carries it... http://www.taneycomonights.com
Greg Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Boy you're right. It is not easy to find. The big US online fly tying outfits don't seem to carry it. I found it on an australian fly tying company website but it was pretty pricey. Then I found some on good old ebay. Just cost a few bucks including shipping. Pretty exotic material - at least here. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 31, 2005 Root Admin Posted December 31, 2005 I got a bid on a roo hide on ebay- it ends in 8 days though so it may go through the roof.
Brian Wise Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I don't think I've seen it at either the Bass Pro or the fly shop in Springfield. That doesn't suprise me, I think they put more $ into the floor mural than all the fly tying materials together. Anyway, How's it going Greg?!?! Brian My Youtube Channel
Greg Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 It's going good Brian. I hope you're having a good winter and getting in some fishing. You're right about Bass Pro. For that large of a store their selection of fly tying materials is kind of weak. Guest flyfishBDS Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Gee if only I'd known to pick up all the 'roo skins that bounced off my assorted vehicles over the years. Had one leap clean over the bonnet of the car I was driving, about 4 minutes, shy of the lake I was heading to fish one morning. Hard to string up a rod when your still shaking. Nice looking fly by the way. I'm guessing that was a dyed skin, or maybe looks darker in the pic. Are you using the underfur? picking out the guard hairs? If your buying roo skins you might want to check if your getting the red kangaroo (which is closest to the color above) or the gray (which would range from a dark dun to a gray-white on the belly Lots of innovative fly patterns down under too good forum for this at www.flylife.com.au Cheers Steve
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 14, 2006 Root Admin Posted January 14, 2006 I bought a full pelt - red - off ebay... should be here in a week.
Members TeamKingTuckey Posted January 29, 2006 Members Posted January 29, 2006 When I went home this week, I mentioned to my father about this Roo bug and how it’s hard to find Roo hair and he laughed. I said "what" he said "that’s funny because I have three hides in the shop", he clipped me off a pretty good sized piece tan and gray in color. So maybe if you guys ever get the chance to come to Jeremy’s Fly tying class we might be able to make some Roo-Bugs. In search for "Papa Pump" ><(((*>
