Steve Smith Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Leave it to Terry to lighten things up. Just about the time things sort of quiet down here, Terry’s evil twin jumps in to stir the pot. Dan, do what I do… accidentally leave your box in the truck and use your buddy’s fly box. Seriously, I’ve bought every shape and form of fly box and don’t think your going to find a one size fits all. For me the closest [and certainly the most expensive] to the perfect box is my three drawer Richardson fly chest [http://www.chestflybox.com]. It folds out to make a great workbench and it adjust high enough on my chest to keep dry. Oh Terry, you forgot “Perfection Knot Schizophrenic Paranoid Envy “ and consumption of Smith’s biscuits and gravy. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
Crippled Caddis Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Yup---Terry nailed it Dano---you're delusional! Perfect flybox? In the words of a neighbor: "Tain't no sech thang"! "You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in their struggle for independence." ---Charles Austin Beard
Snow Fly Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 C&F which shows on the waterproof box I received at Christmas {for streamers} as being made by Scientific Angler looks to be a good box. All my fly boxes{TOO MANY} are C&F and they hold everything nicely, even the real small stuff. My friend made some #32 have not tried them in the C&F boxes, CAN'T FIND THEM "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Danoinark Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 Ah yes, just as I expected. There is NOT the PERFECT FLY BOX. And as I expected the C and F design is being touted as the closest it comes. But being the frugal fly fisherman that I am I hate to depart with $$ for one of those. I did come to a conclusion this evening, maybe even an ephiphany, in that I took all of my present boxes, and decided that I carry way to many flies. So I have spent the evening sorting and now have a cornicopia of favorite patterns in just 4 boxes as opposed to several. I have streamers in one of those $2 plano typed divided plastic ones. I have drys, worms and eggs in an old Okuma metal flybox, one side with compartments and one side with foam. I have midges, assorted nymphs, scuds, jigs, and a few sundry other bugs in a Cliff Days Worth box that I didn't even remember I had, and finally soft hackles in one of those 99 cent Walmart flip top boxes you can get in the cosmetic department. It also holds some indicators, shot and other stuff. I really cut down on the number of flies and got rid of patterns I never fish or have not been productive. A side note on the Walmart flip top boxes. They are made just like the Orvis ones that costs about 10 bucks. Some of you may know the box I am talking about. I never pass the cosmetic / travel area without buying one or two. So I do feel better, I am ready for a trip now. Heck I even feel organized somewhat, or maybe its the medication Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Don Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 A friend of mine swears that the C&F box on the right is the best all in one flybox. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_U...8RowWaterProof/ Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
3wt Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I have a C&F. I like it, but it's not perfect. Yes, they will hold down to #24's (probably smaller) tightly. The tough part is getting them in and out of the foam slits. I hear that the nubby tack stlye works pretty good for largish flies
MrDucky Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Mr. Ducky makes fun of my improvisations, but I'm glad I'm not the only one! Make up boxes, craft boxes, and children's toys can make great fly boxes. Look around...you might be surprised by what you have around the house! As for Terry...what kind of pain killers are you still taking, man??? Yikes!!! I Hate that warning horn
