Members GoDoe Posted March 17, 2015 Members Posted March 17, 2015 2 of us headed from Norman to Marvel Trout Camp to put in the kayaks and paddle up stream. Surprised to see the water still moving at a pretty good level at 10:30am. The schedule said generation would stop at 7:30am but it didn't appear that that had happened. Anyway, we made our way up stream stopping to fish a few spots along the way. Water was just too swift and too deep for my liking. At noon we decide to sit down and have lunch as the water was falling. By about 1 it was at a decent flow to fish but we just were not finding and fish to cast to. From about 2 til 5 conditions were perfect and there were lots of trout boiling the surface. We threw everything we had at them and they just would not eat our flies. Finally we saw other fishermen having success so we asked for help. The smallest flies we had were about size 12 and what we found that they finally would take were size 20. Paddled back down to Marvel and off the water about 5:30. Between us we only got 3 trout but it was good to be out and there were lots of opportunities. We will be better equipped next time. Thanks to those guys on the river that gave us some help.
Nick Williams Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Every time I have been lately they have been eating small midges, and if you aren't getting close to that size, they are just going to ignore what you have! Was the water still chocolaty or had it cleared up yet? Saturday it was dirty, but they were still eating midges! - Nick
Members GoDoe Posted March 18, 2015 Author Members Posted March 18, 2015 Some of the water was cloudy and some was clean. Seemed like the faster moving water was clear but the slower, deeper water was a little cloudy. We were fishing the faster clearer but the guys we saw and that gave us help were fishing the slower dirtier water. Yep to the midges. A couple of fish were not as picky and ate the big flies I was throwing but not many. I tied up some stuff yesterday and will again today to be more prepared for the next trip. Thanks for the info. On The Fly 6 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I always do well on midges. I can usually get away with 18's but sometimes they will only take 20's. I always try and have red, black, blue dun, olive, and tan zebra midges with me. Tan with a copper bead and copper wraps have been really good, especially around the gravel parking area up closer to the dam. Olive jigs are usually a hit, especially in slow moving off colored water. Members GoDoe Posted March 31, 2015 Author Members Posted March 31, 2015 Thanks ya'll. Now trying to get my schedule to work with the generation schedule. John
Members Trout Predator Posted March 31, 2015 Members Posted March 31, 2015 Thanks ya'll. Now trying to get my schedule to work with the generation schedule. John Jut a heads up. The generation schedule is often wrong. An example is today and yesterday. The schedule says they aren't generating but the water is definatly up and running 2,800 cfps.
