slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Took outta Roark west this morning headed to Birch Branch area. marked a few fish in 30 FOW sususpended 15-20 FD rigged through them got bit quick 11 in crappie then missed one caught 3 more keeper crappie and 3 white bass. Thought we had them figured out. I was giving my trolling motor and battery a workout trying to stay on the fish. Thought we could do better at another location or at least get outta wind. Ran to greeser to windy, ran to googer to windy fished a little in between no bites. Water temp was 48 almost everywhere we went. Didnt go to back of creeks though. Long story short 4 keeper crappie 3 whites lots of wind lots of searching for fishable water. Hope ya'll slayed'em today we sure didn't. Sac River Jim 1
Sac River Jim Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 thnx for a good report, ive been hitting greeser pretty hard the last two weeks and have yet to catch a crappie in there or in googer even at the backs of them. Anyhows I drove around just cking water conditions and some crappie are being caught at the 39 bridge. there were 5 boats tired up to standing timber in that stump flat just above the bridge. 39 area the water has a slight brown stain to it but its very fishable theres no floating debris coming down the creek. Went from there on up to Campbell ford and theres not much water up there and its crystal clear with green slime still on the bottom. It doesnt look like to me the water had even gotten up. the good hole of water where wetzzle branch runs in below the low water bridge has filled in but thats as far as i walked down. I didnt make it to the long flat. From there I ran over to H highway and drove down to the conservation area just above greeser on the east side and besides being too windy to fish the water clarity there was very good.
slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Thanks SRJ im greatful for any info/advive on finding crappie this early in spring. Usually chase whites or JB the dam for walleye and wait for crappie to start stacking up and staging for the spawn. It showed yesterday that they weren't There at least For me. struggle to find fish not knowing where to look main lake was out atleast for me in my little boat. 175B polar. Kraft w 60hp yam. Any Advice willing to share on early slabs would be greatly aappreciated.
Sac River Jim Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 You might try putting in at the ramp at 39 bridge go under the bridge and either fish minnows on the stumps or a jig 18" under a bobber and target the lawdowns.
slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Thanks SRJ! You seem seasoned on stockton. Have seen that ramp on google earth never launched there. What kinda slope/Shape is it in? How tricky is the run from roark west to 39 bridge? I havent went past the timber bank on the right. You know the one that looks awsome just passed greaser and there's stick ups like crazy on the left across from it. Hows the run from there on to 39?
Sac River Jim Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 thats three hills and its a very tricky area the right side looks good to run but if you do chances are you will run up on mud. the creek channel runs right thru the timber on the other side. if youve got navionics or lakemaster maps study them before you try to run it. thats why i suggested putting in at 39. that channel changes about every year and we idle it or run slow the first time and once we got our track on our maps we'll venture it a little faster. when the waters up in the spring i dont have any reservation putting my ranger in at 39. id rather do it than run the creek channel up there, i havent even run the channel yet this year but i'm going to in the next couple of days just to get the track on my graph.
Sac River Jim Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 coming out of griesser you can go straight across the lake and stay bout 100 yards off the bank and make it up to the timber and the pockets on the left side. i run to the timber then troll on over to the pockets the fishing been decent on the left side but be careful its a lower unit nightmare with the lake as low as it is.
trapshot25 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Would a kayak work up there? Usually fish out of boat but looking to expand when I don't have someone to go with. Thanks
slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Thanks SRJ. When the back of sons gets hot I'll take your advice and dump boat at 39 instead of the run.
slab slinger Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Would a kayak work up there? Usually fish out of boat but looking to expand when I don't have someone to go with. Thanks["/quote] I would take kayak over to Coffman branch and fish the left side all the way around point and up same bank to cows ford. Awsone spring crappie and bass fishing in that small area. You can put in off ood road bed and be there in a jiffy winds permitting. We all know about the stockton winds and if you dont i would advise to Stay on the bank and fish same area. Good bn fishing there too.
