Members firemedjoe Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 Could someone tell me How to tie a midge and scud dropper rig. Also can you use a wooley Booger instead of a scud Thanks
Terry Beeson Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Any dropper rig... tie a piece of tippet the length you wish to the dropper fly. Then tie the other end and tie it to the bend of the upper hook. The knot you use is up to you, but I use a cinch or improved cinch. WB as a dropper? Might look like a fry chasing a bug... Might work, but remember the hook on the upper fly will have to take the pressure. Members firemedjoe Posted January 24, 2007 Author Members Posted January 24, 2007 So tie a wooley booger first then a scud or a midge
Terry Beeson Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 OK... let's start over.... backing, fly line, leader, tippet, "main" fly or indicator fly, tippet, dropper. The dropper is the one at the end of the rig. If you tie a scud or small fly then a wooly as a dropper, it might appear to a fish to be a fry chasing a bug and might work well. Rigged with the WB as the main fly and a scud as a dropper... well... It COULD work, but just doesn't look right in my head... But then that's MY head we're talkin' about... Snow Fly Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I know a guide who had some success using a scud above a #12 Sculpin, just like you said Terry, Sculpin chasing the bug! "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Members firemedjoe Posted January 24, 2007 Author Members Posted January 24, 2007 I fished with john wilson last year and he showed me how to fish 2 flies at a time and i dont remember how he set it up And what flies he used
Members Growler Posted January 24, 2007 Members Posted January 24, 2007 Has anyone ever used or seen the flies tied specifically for use as an "indicator" fly? They have a mono loop coming out the back for tying the dropper tippet to. I saw one awhile back, don't remember where, but if you tie your own flies, this would be worth investigating. G
Kicknbass Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I typically will tie the tippet of the second fly to the bent of the first. A new trick that seems to work is to tie the tippet on w/ a Blood knot leaving a long tag end of the blood knot. Tie the lead fly to the tag end of the blood knot. Gavin Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 If your using a midge as the second fly, I'd go with something that you can see as your first fly. A glo-ball, flashy nypmh, wooly bugger or mohair leach, etc. Use the first fly as your gunsight.... I usually tie droppers to the bend of the fist fly. Cheers.
Leonard Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 This is how I tie my droppers... when tying on the top fly... I add about a 1 1/2-2foot tag.. I pull all of that through and judge the distance I want my dropper.. instead of try to tye in at the bend of the hook... how is a few helpful knots.. www.flyanglersonline.com/begin/knots (copy and paste in search).. it should take you to it.. and here is what my set up looks like...(I did shorten the dropper to fit picture hope this helps guys..
