Members little ike Posted April 5, 2015 Members Posted April 5, 2015 First time long time follower of ozark anglers....newbie from the northeast. Looking to get the opinions of the "ned heads" on this rig being used in the upstate ny area. Why shouldn't this work? Or does it? Any of you experts use this finess tactic north of pa? Also is the 1/10 oz head a starting point in the 3' to 6' range. Looking forward to trying after ice out. Thanks
rps Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Fish are fish. What works in the Ozarks will work there. I use 1/16 heads in less than 10 feet of water because Dave (dtrs5kprs) tells me that's best. Have fun.
drew03cmc Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 It'll work for you! Put in the time and you will be rewarded. Andy
rps Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Who is in the mood for an anecdote? One that illustrates what I wrote above. I was fortunate enough to have a father that took me fishing. We went to Canada several times when I was between 10 and 14 and then one last time when I was in college. Dad liked to hire the same Indian guide, a fellow called Charlie Fisher. One trip, I packed away the newest latest Oklahoma baits, purple hair jigs with purple Uncle Josh eels. One afternoon when we were struggling, I tied one of the jig and eels on my line. I began to catch decent small mouth. By the fourth or fifth fish Charlie had my father change over. When we left Canada, the jigs and eels still left went into his tip. He was very grateful.
dtrs5kprs Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 It will work. Right after ice out look at flats with any remaining grass, if none is available look at points or rockpiles near spawning bays (assuming you are on natural lakes). That is pretty similar to how we fish it in grass lakes around Kansas City at ice out. We just have trees and coves/creeks as the big difference. Some of the same places you might fish a stickbait or a grub early in the year. 1/16 is a good start. If it is a shallow lake, the lighter 1/32oz heads are not out of the game. Unless you are really dialed in on a deep bite it is usually best to throw it shallow first. If they are up there you will find out very quickly, especially with the brown fish. I have several customers in MN, WI, MI, etc. Have yet to find a place it won't work.
