slab slinger Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 Put in at Mutton Creek at 9:30am and ran to birch area. Marked alot of suspended fish in 30fow so tried to get them to bite with little luck. Moved up into 15fow and found some active fish. Couldn't quiet zero in on them so switched to trolling flicks in 25fow. That was pretty slow so switched back to shallow fish. Got trip cut short by the boss she wanted me home. Fished 4 hrs and caught 9 keeper crappie and 1 white. Dad had 11 keeper crappie and 3 WB. Bite was slow for me and fish seemed to be everywhere from bank to 30fow just couldn't figure them out today. Did get one 14" slabber trolling. Water Temp was 64 at 9am 68 at 1pm. Vis was 4' in the area i fished but could see bottom in 6fow easy at Mutton ramp. Shallow fish caught on 8th oz head smoke purple flake swimmin minnows. Trolled purple tiger flicks. I only caught 2 keeps trolling but my dad had 6 keeps trolling. All fish females with eggs. They were bloody and lose in sacks. Looked ready to spawn anytime. Did catch some small bucks in a cut in 4fow but no keepers. Had a tough time figuring them out today. Hope ya'll can... Hammer time, crappie-hunter and Sac River Jim 3
Sac River Jim Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 thnx for posting the pic of that egg sack. those big girls are gonna spawn pretty quick and i agree with you because of the water clarity they are gonna spawn maybe even as deep as 15fow unless we get enough rain to murk things up. couple weeks ago i was catching the biggest males ive caught in a long time what i thought at the time were suspended in up to 20fow. maybe they was building nests in the the 15' range.
Members crappie-hunter Posted May 9, 2015 Members Posted May 9, 2015 I put in at CC tonight and ran up turnback and fished the deep side to the right. the water temp showed 72 on my electronics, had to be due to the rain this morning. I set out to slow troll with minnows and jigs, and my 7 yr old started throwing a curly tail jig and catching crappie on the bank. I couldnt let him show me up, so I started casting too and we had a great time. Ended up 8 keepers, but I couldnt tell you how many little ones we threw back. The bite was very light, and we had several nice fish spit the jigs back at us when we got them close to the boat. Only one of the smaller females had eggs, this is the first time out this year that most of my crappie were not egg carrying females. Sac River Jim 1
