Members ckjacks Posted February 4, 2007 Members Posted February 4, 2007 Love this fly, but don't know how to make the hunchback. Is it just a reg scud with some material layered on it? Or is it a special hook? If anyone can help thanks.
Guest flyfishBDS Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Yeh I love Mike's pattern too. Mike and Todd at Mclellan's are two of my best mates _ first two fly fishers I met in Arkansas and educated me enormously, including some decent Ozark hangovers LOl. Owe them a great deal, run a great flyshop too. Anyway, the deal with Mike's scud is the lead tape underbody.Cut to shape and fold around the hook. Tie in rib, scud back then dub. Funnily enough Ive never tied these, always bought them (helps his royalties). I know a friend of mine has made a set of cutters for making the bodies. Ive been meaning to see if he is interested in selling some, must chase him up. Olive was always number one, but last year fished the tan hard all year with clients and slayed them. Tan rainbow a good color too Cheers Steve
Gavin Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Another way to do a hunched effect is with some smooth jaw pliers. Wrap the hook with lead, dub it etc, then take it out of the vise and mash it with pliers. The same works for making sowbugs look fatter except you use a straight shank hook and mash them horizontally after they are tied. Cheers.
Members Oldschoolcane Posted February 16, 2007 Members Posted February 16, 2007 Can anyone tell me about the McClellands Sow Bug? I think its also called the woven sow bug? Can anyone offer a picture as I've never seen it before?
Guest flyfishBDS Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Ah the woven V-Rib Sowbug, also developed by Mike Ive been looking for a picture but from www.mcflychop.com here is the material list Woven Sow Bug Hook: TMC 2487 or 2488 for sizes 12-18. Thread: Uni 8/0 Rusty Dun. Antenna: .004" smoke colored mono. Body: small, round V-Rib (two strands woven around the hook shank). I do like this fly, looks a lot like the small almost translucent sowbugs we get here. The weave is kinda tricky until you have practiced it a few times. Ive fallen out of practice LOL Right now I can't find one grr Hope I have something soon
Terry Beeson Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Here's the weaving I learned. Click here. It's not the woven sowbug, but you can use this technique with the same results.
