Members kevin wcmo Posted February 4, 2007 Members Posted February 4, 2007 what have people found to be the best setup for using minnows for trout while drifting? style of hook and size? weight setup? proper hooking of minnow? tail? back? eyes? lips? been going down to taney for several years now for a 4-day weekend in febuary. used everthing from jigs to worms while drifting, just want to try minnows for a little better size of trout. thanks for your time. kevin
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 4, 2007 Root Admin Posted February 4, 2007 Been thinking about doing a piece on drifting- but I'll briefly answer your questions. I usually tie a #8 hook on and pinch a split shot above the hook about 24 inches. The size shot depends on who much water is running. I don't want to put too much on or it will drag the bottom too much and get snagged up quick. I need just enough to get there and lightly bounce. I hook the minnow in the eyes- thru one and out the other. You'll catch more browns using a minnow and I think bigger rainbows too.
perchjerker Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 With no water to some running I've had good luck with a 1/16 and 1/8 split shot about 2ft above a #8 hook anchored on the flats just below Fall Creek boat dock in 5-6 ft of water.
