Members Eric the awful fisherman Posted August 12, 2015 Members Posted August 12, 2015 Doing a two day float this weekend. I'm considering taking the fly rod. I was curious if anyone has any luck or had any pattern they might hit. I'm thinking top water and craw patterns. Caught some largemouth before but I've never hit a smallie yet. Thanks.
Lancer09 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Creek crawlers, streamers, and and anything buggy will catch a smallie. However with it being summer time, throw poppers and wiggle minnows and get them looking up.

Flysmallie Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Okay I'm back. Something on top. They aren't real picky though. Get it up next to some wood and hang on. I use a gurgler most of the time because they are quick and easy to tie and I'm not great at getting it up next to some wood without some casualties. Add in some streamers and some heavily weighted bottom hugging stuff and you should be good. I could do it with 3 flies and have a blast.
Danimal Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Hada's creek crawlers are awesome. A bit pricey though -- I've dove to the river bottom many times to retrieve them. LOL RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!

RSBreth Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I like any topwater this time of year, but if they aren't coming up on top try Clouser Minnows for mid-depth or any bottom bouncing leech or muddler pattern you like if they are deep. It's more about getting it in front of them then specific patterns. Danimal 1
