I tie them in, then twist them together.

As to scud hook vs nymph hook, I use a scud hook for midges. I feel there is a larger hook gap with a scud hook, thereby getting a better hookup.

Floss will work, but I find the key to midges is the sparse bodies. I will only use one wrap of thread down and then one back up for a body, then taper just a bit thicker at the thorax. I would only wrap one down and one up with floss also. Also when tieing in wire ribbing I start the wire at the bead and wrap back to give the body a more uniform profile.
