Members Davy Wotton Posted February 15, 2007 Members Posted February 15, 2007 I am not going to choose sides here either with Moose or the moderator concerned. But will add this. Within the guide community here on the White river, river talk runs fast. Each and very one of us may well have some personal issues with another, one way or the other, that is human nature. As a general rule we all get along one way or the other, the river is like the factory floor in many respects. There is also if you like accepted practice in the way guides expect to be treated by way of using their customer base for referrals to accomodations in the area. And also how trout docks, lodges also there after work with either the guides they hire or the clients that are housed by the resort. And that mainly relates to financial issues and soliciting to take that customer base away from either guides or places that provide accommodations. And in some cases l well know that that has not been dealt with in a right and proper manner. You do not hand out business cards when working for another for one. The use of a site such as this or any other for promoting your business activity by using names and so on should not take place. And more so if those persons names used are not aware of the fact that they are being used for that purpose. However, where do you draw the line. Believe me, l have had some of that in the past myself, in in some cases to the law courts. I may well write a post here on this site or any other, only to find that it has been used for a site l am not associated with, copyright !! without my consent or permission. I am not so concerned with issues of say a general nature here by the way, so do not think l am over the top with this, as l am not. What ever l write in general l have no issue with for use. In the case of promoting your own business activty, then pay what it takes to do it. And if you feel inclined set up your own board and make your own personal choices so far as deleting posts you do not care for. Accept that if you write something for another they may also have the right to delete that post. Davy. http://davywotton.com
Terry Beeson Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Well said, Davy. I can honestly say that you and other guides and fly shop owners on both forums have done really well in squelching any "blatant promotions" that gave me the impression you were just looking for business. In many cases, you, Phil, Michael, Steve, John B, John W, and others have answered direct questions in such a way that seemed very selfless - not self-serving at all! Heck, I think I've even seen Phil recommend OTHER lodging facilities on here... I did happen to catch a couple of recent posts on another forum that were worthy of "Superbowl commercial" status and not posted by the owner or any moderator of said forum. Those posts are now in oblivion. Enough said by me... I should add... I'm ready for the whole subject to "die" a quick death. So this is MY last post on this thread. I hope it is the last one on this thread period... SilverMallard Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Ah! Thanks for the explanation, Davy. Now it's pretty clear what the whole bru-ha-ha was about. As is typical, it takes two to tango. And there is usually bad judgment or behavior on both sides of a flare-up like this one. But I will say this: Moose is a "new kid in town." Has anybody bothered to just explain this stuff to him? Or did he just get slammed without knowing why? That would be an important factor to me. I don't know him. I do know the guide/mod. I do know the business climate of northern AR's outdoor rec industry. So I tend to want to give Moose the benefit of the doubt. SilverMallard Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Oh...I forgot...Davy, when you post something on a BBS on the Internet, the owner of the BBS holds the copyright unless you reserve it in writing on that specific post. That's the law. Most user agreements on professional websites spell that out, too. In effect, if you post something on a discussion forum, it becomes public domain. WebFreeman Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I'm not trying to be stupid (not that I have to try that hard), but is Moose being slammed on this board? Maybe I'm not reading things right. If someone wants to PM me if I'm blind, please do. SilverMallard Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I didn't take it as a slam, WebFreeman. I think Davy was saying that the guide/mod in question feels that Moose has violated some unwritten rules about business they did together, and thus he is using his "position" as a moderator to censor Moose's contributions to FFAM. Davy himself said he isn't taking either side. It's actually much worse than that. I just read everything I could find on the matter, and the guide/mod in question seems to me to be engaging in some defamation as well. And then he locks the threads so that Moose cannot defend himself or even address accusations being leveled at him. And the guide/mod also deleted posts made by and posts mentioning John Berry...another long-time guide on the river and frequent contributer to these forums. In fact, the guide/mod over there posted a message to ME to email him...not a "would you please email me," mind you! Just a command to email him. I doubt Moose will be posting over there anymore and I doubt that will cost him a nickel. At over $200/night for lodging, meals, and concierge service; I doubt many of his target customers are reading any of this nonsense. And he has no problem finding good guides because he is paying them 50% more than the going rate on the river and his clients are big tippers. And as long as guides can get good paying work and their checks don't bounce, many of the top guides will be guiding his guests. WebFreeman Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Thanks, SilverM. I kinds of thought that's what was going on. By moose's last post here, I thought something may have happened here I missed. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
SilverMallard Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Oh! Now I understand your question. There is a lot of overlap in the players on this forum and on FFAM. And if you go over there and read about this nonsense, you will see that a couple of the guys from here have kicked him while he was down and then high-fived it with the rest of the "guide clique" over there. So I suspect Moose just figured he should remove himself from BOTH forums.
