Members Jack Perdew Posted November 26, 2015 Members Posted November 26, 2015 What hook are you using with 6 in shad. I'm using 3/0 circle several hits today without getting the hook set. Had one good hook which fish spooled reel and poped the 15 test line so if you see yellow braid around point 11 it has a nice fish on it.
Dan the fisherman Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Jack that sounds about right. Id think a 3/0 or 4/0 would be good. Did the fish take all the line off the reel? Or did it break durning fight.
J-Doc Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 7/0 problem solved. Chase the fish with trolling motor or even big motor. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Members Jack Perdew Posted November 26, 2015 Author Members Posted November 26, 2015 Took it all ,it was my back line 200 out when she took and ran south
Dan the fisherman Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Wow! Tuff break man. Must have been a big'in
Dan the fisherman Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Point 11 huh.. What time were fishing. I was out in monte ne from 10-2. Didn't do very well I caught 1 smaller keeper striper but that was all. I couldn't really fish hard sense I had my wifey and boys with me.
Members Jack Perdew Posted November 26, 2015 Author Members Posted November 26, 2015 Jdoc your absolutely right but this was a case newbe at striper fishing having too may rods out with loose drag, and not paying attention. I hope to meet her again or her sister as I will not make the same mistake twice Lol J-Doc 1
Members Jack Perdew Posted November 26, 2015 Author Members Posted November 26, 2015 I was out 12 to 6 the bit started at dusk 430 to 530 working the bank as u go out of Mont ne left to the second cut
Stump bumper Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I have always wondered how that line gets in the water when I snag a line with a single hook on the end. Now I know.... I was using too small of hooks on Gizards also until J-Doc set me straight, went back and researched a little and he is right 6/0-8/0 for 6-8 inch gizzard shad and 3-5 for brooders. I had just the opposite problem, had four lines out with 50lb braid and 17lb leader and had a drag too tight and popped the 17lb leader. Having the drag too tight is a great way to ruin a good reel. It did not break at the knot though, made me feel good about my knot tying skills.
Dan the fisherman Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Wow very interesting guys. I've always used much smaller hooks. I use 1/0 for brooded and only ever use 5/0 hooks for baits over a foot. I don't have n e thing bigger than 5/0. I may try bigger hooks also. But honestly I've never had trouble staying hooked up. Getting the bite is were I struggle. I definitely would feel better fighting a big fish with a bigger hook. But then again, I fish with 10-12 pound test n e way and need to fight them very carefully.
