Beginner's first trip

My dad, brother,  and I are planning on floating/fishing the Buffalo mid to late March. I've floated it several times but never with the intent to do any angling and my dad and brother are relatively new to both aspects of floating and kayak angling. With that in mind what would be the best float for a 2-3 day trip that would yield a decent float and allow for two beginners to catch a few safely?

Assuming no high water...Gilbert to Buffalo Point would be a good, easy two day float with good fishing water.  Mid to late March, however, is a pretty iffy fishing time.  The fish will likely be transitioning from winter mode to spawning mode, and the water will probably still be somewhat cold.  You might have trouble finding fish and getting them to bite.  It gets a lot more consistent in April.

I agree with Al. March is so iffy weather and river wise. Really, in my opinion, I think March, nowadays, is actually a winter month. Seems like lately, winter is really Jan through Mar. We have been getting snowfall and cold weather more often than not in March. Then again, if conditions are right, there is no reason not to. I would stick to to the middle of the river, lots of access and manageable distances.

What they said^^ but not after Memorial day if you want more fish and less canoe hatch. April thru the first few weeks in May.

Thanks guys we weren't expecting a high numbers trip but just wanting to explore and practice fishing from their kayaks without it feeling like we would be better off fishing in a empty ditch. It's been a long time but I've floated the river from steel creek to the white river but as I said fishing wasn't really a concern or hobby of mine. I did a 2 month internship with the visitor center at Ponca when I was in college so I had plenty of down time to float the upper river.

Fishing seems to be better on the middle and lower river.  My favorite is still Rush to the White which you sound like you're familiar with.  Putting in at Mt. Hersey always seems to be a decent way to avoid some of the crowds.  As I recall that float is basically three really big pools, so maybe some wintering fish habitat around there.
