Lodging in and around Montauk State Park

So I'm planning a trip to Montauk with my girlfriend around the first part of May. Normally this isn't the type of thing I care about, I usually just stay in the cheapest motel I can find. Unfortunately, since I've got my better half with me, I need to be cognizant of the quality of lodging. For the weekend I'm looking at, only the hotel rooms at the lodge are available There aren't any very good pictures or anything online. Just wanted to see if anyone has any experience staying in one of these rooms and rather or not they would recommend them? If not, is there any place to stay in the area that you would recommend?

Motel rooms are usually fine-the ones we've stayed in have 2 full size beds and a shower with 8-10 channels on the tv. Don't have coffee machines in the room but all are within a short walk to the lodge. Little brother stayed in one room that he thought had a musty smell to it but only problem we've ever had was during the winter season when the heat didn't work well in our room. Rooms are cheaper at the motels in Licking and Salem did have a Holiday Inn Express but it is called something else now and you have anywhere from a 15-20 minute drive to those motels. Showers have good flow and lots of hot water after a hard day of fishing.

I stay solo in the hotel rooms in the winter when low temps are going to be in the 20s.  They are very basic but all I use it for is a place to put my stuff and sleep.  In the winter the days are short and there is time to kill in the evening (so heat and basic cable is nice).

 

Pros: 

My experience is that they are clean.  In the prime months with people in them all the time it might depend on who was in there last, I don’t know, but in the winter when they are seldom used there are clean. 

 

Super convenient access to the fishery.  Be rigged up in the lot and drive to the spot of your choice in minutes.  I don’t fish the park but access to the Current is minutes away.

 

For one or two fishers, they are fine.  Very basic but fine for my needs (more on that in the cons).

 

The lodge is right next door so if you want hot cooked meals, limited groceries (including beer), and a pretty darn good tackle store it’s right there.  Nice people too.

 

Cons:

Price is getting a bit steep.  Up to $80 a night in the winter off season might be the tipping point for me.  Licking is not that far away (or Salem).

 

They are basically a minimum convenience room.  No coffee maker, microwave, nothing in that regard.  Two beds, a toilet, sink and shower, and basic cable TV.  So I do my cooking outside on the picnic table out back with my single burner propane stove.  I always have the back area to myself in the winter but in prime time it is probably different.

 

Two electrical outlets, one for the desk lamp and TV, and one for the night stand lamp and the alarm clock.  If you want to plug something in the have to unplug something else.

I agree with Muddler4 about the lodge, Wife and I stayed there last summer for three nights during the week and found it adequate but very damp. It was clean and the people at the lodge always friendly. I was wondering if the lodge floods at all, it seems unlikely as it never looks like it ever changes.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Sounds like the rooms in the park aren't too bad. Like I said I don't usually care about the accommodations when I'm fishing, but I'v e made the mistake of taking my girlfriend with me on a trip before and staying in one of my "fishing hotels" and it's a mistake I'll never make again.

You might want to look into Reeds Cabins.  Just outside the park.  They have cabins and are much more comfortable than the park motel in my opinion.  It's probably been 20 years or so since I stayed in the park motel but as I recall they weren't much and way overpriced.  They didn't even have a TV back then.

You cant go wrong with either one. I prefer to stay at Reeds as they have full kitchens and refrigerators. There is also an inground pool incase your girlfriend wants to lay out while you hit the stream. No TV but they have a game room with cable tv and pool tables. They also have a store for food/flies/etc
