Members turkeyhawk2005 Posted March 3, 2007 Members Posted March 3, 2007 maybe some one can tell me wehat i am doing ...i use a 5 wf line i git the roll all the way just about to the tippet and it like doesnt have the enertia to follow the fly out and it drops and the n i have to back cast to remend
Gavin Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Dunno, hard to tell without seeing you cast, but my guess is that your starting the roll without enough line behind you, leaning forward into your roll cast, or pushing forward with your arm (maybe all 3). When it comes to roll casting, more line mass behind you is good, Pushin is bad, pulling is good......Do whatever you need to do to get a big loop of line behind you, and try to lead with your elbow and pull the rod through your forward cast to a firm stop. Its kind of like driving a big nail into a wall at shoulder height. Cheers.
Brian Wise Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Do you notice this problem when nymphing heavy nymphs and casting dries?? Brian My Youtube Channel
Members turkeyhawk2005 Posted March 21, 2007 Author Members Posted March 21, 2007 all flies ....like i said about 1/2 way through the leader it drops ..and i see it comming it looks really good at the start and than it just peters out frustating so i go back to the basic 10 - 2 errr !!!
Members outdoorarki Posted March 22, 2007 Members Posted March 22, 2007 I have the same problem. It is frustrating. Been practicing as much as posible to try to figure it out. So far no good.
Danoinark Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 I am certainly no expert, but I used to have a similar problem. I corrected it when I let the water load the rod before I made the roll. Other words I don't allow any slack in the fly line before I start the roll cast. As I lift for the roll there is enough tension to help load the rod which provides enough enertia to push forward through the cast. 3wt Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 I am also not a casting expert, but I have had this problem myself, and I have taught at least 3 other people to cast and have given them this advice to help them with the same problem. First make sure your line is behind you before you begin (as stated above)...be patient with this step and make sure it gets fully behind you before beginning forward motion (just like waiting for your backcast to straighten before you forecast) Then when you end your cast, make sure you end ABRUPTLY. This helps transfer the energy from your cast to the line efficiently. If the line loses energy it will not turn over the leader. This allows me to roll cast a 3 wt. line with a size 10 weighted wooly bugger effectively (not the easiest thing to do with a 3 wt, but I manage). Good luck.
Members outdoorarki Posted March 23, 2007 Members Posted March 23, 2007 How far can you effectivly roll cast?
Guest flyfishBDS Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Its way easier to fix when you can see it. I have a few ideas. I wish we had a casting pond at the store but it was removed. I do offer casting lessona down on the river (rolls are way better done on the water) Im not sure where Bethpage is, but there may be other casting instructors you can go to closer. Otherwise come down adn fish etc and Ill try to help you out. Cheers Steve
Brian Wise Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Outdoorarki, Depending on the fly and rod you are using you can effectively roll cast a mile.....some of it may not be "regular" roll casting but it can still be done. Brian My Youtube Channel
