Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 7, 2006 Root Admin Posted January 7, 2006 Edward Spence Tuesday 1/3 - Got in the water below the dam at 3:30 PM and started with a #16 Pheasant Tail Soft Hackle in the rebar area. It was slow but I had several strikes before catching two rainbows, 11 and 12 inches. just before quiting at 5:30 I landed a nice 15 inch rainbow. There were very few fishermen below the dam. Wed 1/4 - Started at 8:30 AM again with the PTSH at the rebar area. Generation had just ended and the fishing was good. I landed 7 rainbows, 11 to 12 inches, and broke off a nice fish. At 9:30 I landed a 21 inch Brown on the #16 PTSoft Hackle tied to a 6x leader. It was a fun 20 minutes or so. I quit for lunch at 11:30. That afternoon I started back at 2:30 with the same fly at the same place. Fishing was slow, but I caught three small rainbows before quiting at 5:00. Again we almost had the lake to ourselves. Thursday 1/5 - I started again at the rebar area with the same #16 PT Soft Hackle determined to stay with it as long as it worked. Fishing was much slower as there had been no generation the night before. I caught 5 rainbows before quiting at 11:30. That afternoon the wind came up resulting in some tangles. Fishing was very slow until I switched to a #14 White body Soft Hackle and was rewarded with a strike almost every cast landing eight or ten nice rainbows, all over 12 inches. I wore out my fly and quit at 4:45. This was a great trip with lots of action and few fishermen to compete with for space. With the exception of the the windy Thursday afternoon the weather was perfect. All the fish caught were released unharmed. Bruce Cochran Tues 1/3 - PM I caught 6, mostly on a #12 Yellow Crackle Back between the rebar area and the lower end of the gravel bar. I fished from 3:30 to 5:00.Wednesday 1/4 I fished from 9:00 AM to 11:30. I caught 6 rainbows, again mostly on the Yellow Crackle Back between the rebar area and the lower end of the gravel bar. After lunch I fished from 2:30 to 4:45 in the same area and caught 12 fish on the same #12 Crackle Back. Thursday 1/5 I started just before 9:AM at the rebar hole with the Crackle Back and could not catch a fish. I went to the lower end of the gravel bar and fished with a #16 Orange Asher and caught 13 or 14 rainbows with the biggest about 15 inches. I quit about 11:15. Thursday afternoon I fished from 2:15 to 4:45 and caught 11 rainbows, all on a #12 Yellow Crackle Back near the lower end of the gravel bar down stream from the rebar hole. I had the area mostly to myself. I lost 5 or 6 other fish. The biggest fish I landed was 15 inches.
Members coonriverdog Posted January 7, 2006 Members Posted January 7, 2006 Bruce, How do you fish your crackleback flies??? I've heard people swear by them down there, but never fished one, they look like a cross between a bivisable and a wooly worm?! Do you fish them dry or as a wet?? Bake "Here's to saints and sinners who've ever cast a dry fly upon the moving water and couldn't answer why."
Members Trout Nut Posted April 15, 2006 Members Posted April 15, 2006 Bake- I fish cracklebacks lots of ways. On a floating line, swinging them across & down, they ride on or just under the surface and you can strip them or just let them swing. A lot of the strikes come when they are straight downstream from you. Lately I've had more success fishing the same way but on a sink-tip line. BC
