I am interested in fishing for smallmouth on the meremac. I live in Clayton and was wanting to know how far west would I have to go to have a good chance in catching some smallies

Lewis, are you strictly a catch and release angler? if you are, you might have a better chance of getting some information.

Caught some on saturday between Scotts Ford and Indian Springs hardly anybody on the river, don't know whats up with that....shoulda

been crowded.....guess I got in front of them.   Gotta boat or are you hoofin' it.

As discussed in another thread, there are at least a few smallmouth over almost the entire river.  Kinda as a general rule, downstream from the mouth of Big River (Route 66 State Park area), they are present but uncommon.  Between the mouth of the Bourbeuse (Moselle Access) and Big River they are a little less uncommon, but still considerably outnumbered by spotted bass.  Above the mouth of the Bourbeuse, they become common, and the farther upstream you go the more the bass population is dominated by smallies.  But you can go about anywhere on the river and catch bass...they just might not be all smallies.
