SilverMallard Posted March 21, 2007 Author Posted March 21, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Missouri Rural Crisis Center [mailto:monica@morural.org] Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 4:55 PM To: XXX XXXXXXX Subject: Update on Senate Bill 364 Missourians for Local Control "Supporting Local Government - Closer to the People" Please Forward!!! The Time is NOW! Call & Write Your Legislator Both Senate & House List Below 300 family farmers and rural citizens came to the capitol to oppose Senate Bill 364 on Monday. We are keeping them from having the votes to pass this bill thanks to your commitment. As soon as they have the votes to win, they will bring this bill to the Senate floor. Please take two minutes of your time and call as many Senators as you can, as well as your own representative. Also, call Governor Blunt at (573) 751-3222. § SB 364 takes away authority of local elected representatives to protect the health, welfare and property rights of the majority of family farmers, landowners and rural citizens. § SB 364 abolishes the constitutional right of farmers and property owners to legally challenge corporate livestock factories when the negative impacts of these operations infringe upon their property rights. § SB 364 protects the rights of corporate agri-business at the expense of the vast majority of independent family farmers. This bill protects industrial livestock operations, which make up less than ½ of 1% of Missouri’s 105,000 farming operations, while taking away the property rights of the rest of us. Senate Bill 364 is a Blatant Attack on Family Farmers, Rural Communities, Local Control & Property Rights. Any attempt to weaken local control is a threat to democracy… and WE WON’T STAND FOR IT! Wayne SW/MO Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Good information SM, I'm glad to see that family farmers and rural residents are expressing what they know and are concerned about, they know that it all runs downhill and downstream, and that the corporates don't care. I'll repeat, anyone who wants to know the source of the Farms Bureaus stance only needs to go online and check the biographies of their board. Its not the Grange! They have been on the opposite of of outdoorsmen and people concerned with the environment for decades. I don't want be commercial here, but in the bad storm of March 06, we got hammered and Family treated us great. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
SilverMallard Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 There's an op ed piece in today's Springfield News-Leader from the President of Mo Farm Burea that is pure propaganda on SB364 in which he heralds a "compromise" between the association of counties and Farm Bureau regarding SB364. You can log in at the paper's website and post comments after his article. And this would be a VERY good idea. http://www.news-leader.com Then hit the search box and type in "CAFO Compromise" You can register there for free in about 2 minutes and then post. This battle is FAR from won! SilverMallard "How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of - and which no other people on Earth enjoy." damselfly Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 thanks for all the names & numbers......it makes it easy to pick up the phone and it's time well spent. i've called my senator and the gov...
Snow Fly Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 There is a big article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper today 4/5 in the Commentary Section concerning "CAFO" on the negative side towards these types of operations. They came out and stated the good governor is in favor of the bill. He and my governor {IL} should get together and compare notes {personal opinion} "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
SilverMallard Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 I think we might have to eventually drag out the big guns on this one. There are some HUGE guns in MO on the side of tourism, watersports, and environmental conservation who do not owe much or anything to the big ag lobby. I can get to a few of them, but it's gotta be "divine intervention" time. And we aren't there...yet. SilverMallard Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 The "compromise" amendment to the bill that would have guaranteed a minimum setback of 10 miles (started at 5, but went to 10 trying to gain votes) from any state park, state monument, state forest, or national historical site for any Class I CAFO was DEFEATED, and the bill was returned to the informal calendar. So the Pres of MFB's vaulted "compromise" with the assn of counties went down in flames...for now...by about a margin of 2:1. You can go the senate website and look at "all actions" and see the notes from the Senate on April 3rd to see who voted how. Check on your senator. Mine voted NO. SilverMallard Posted April 14, 2007 Author Posted April 14, 2007 It has been reported by multiple media sources and individuals who have attended recent meetings that Rep Blunt and Jr., Gov Matt Blunt are totally in the hip pocket of MO Farm Bureau on this stuff. At a recent watershed meeting in Springfield at Bass Pro Shops, Rep Roy Blunt was asked about the IES statements about groundwater depletion near the proposed Ethanol plant between Rogersville and Forland. His response was reported to be, "We should address those issues as they arise." WHAT? How do you address depleted aquifers? Anybody the least bit familiar with the science knows that is total lunacy! But more importantly, what he said was basically that we should CREATE PROBLEMS that we KNOW we are going to create and worry about how to FIX those problems AFTER we have created them! Does Roy work for the Corps of Engineers? That sounds like something THEY would do! No. A much wiser approach is to find a way to AVOID causing problems for ourselves. How stupid does this clown think we are? I'll tell you... He and the CEO of Farm Bureau also agreed that "uneducated, under-informed locals should not be allowed to stand in the way of large-scale agri-business in Missouri." FYI, Blunt's family business interests are reportedly (in major media) deeply invested in these ethanol production entities. See the quid pro quo? They get huge profits from the ethanol production facilities in exchange for deregulating CAFO's statewide...both of which are positions strongly advocated by MO Farm Bureau under the direction of Mr. Kruse (who hails from SEMO, btw...a part of the state with a completely different set of water and natural resource concerns than we have here in the Ozarks). This CAFO crap already stinks to high Heaven. And they haven't even gotten their way yet! P.S. I wrote to the young Governor about two weeks ago on this issue. I have gotten no acknowledgement of any kind. SilverMallard "How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of - and which no other people on Earth enjoy." crappiefisherman Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 On 2 occasions in your last post you referred to the Govenor of our state as jr, or young. He didnt get there on his own I am sure, but ,he was elected by a majority of Missouri voters and deserves the respect that the office intitles him. SilverMallard Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 I'm no respecter of offices. Haven't been since I resigned my military commission. I know many men I proudly call, "sir." But someone's title...especially an elected official...doesn't automatically rate that in my book. Just so you understand, I would always address him/her in person as Governor _____________, or Senator ________________, etc. In print media I would do the same. On an informal discussion forum, I feel no such compulsion any more than I would talking with close friends or family members. Governor Blunt can EARN my respect by actually doing what is clearly best for EVERYONE in his state, instead of what lines his own pockets. That would be a great start. I don't care for him not because of his shocking lack of experience and credentials, but for his DECISIONS. And I'm a Republican!
