V-Rib Midge

Jeremy Hunt

Recipe:

Hook: 2457 TMC size 12-18

Thread: UTC 70 color to match body

Body: UTC V-rib on spool

Head: Tungsten bead 3/32, 5/64

Tying instructions.

You can see we already started the fly. Slide a bead on and start you’re thread behind the bead. Also tie in the vinyl at the front right behind the bead. Andance you’re thread wraps back making each wrap next to the next wrap until you get to the bend.

Advance thread back to the front right behind the bead.

Grab the v-rib and wind it up to the bead. The only thing to worry about on this step is to make sure the wraps are side by side and not over lapping on top of each other. Another thing to mention is the vinyl you’re using should be the shape of a “D” not a circle or round in shape. Make sure when you tie this in that the flat side is facing down when you first tie it in. You don’t want the flat side showing when you are winding it forward. You will notice that the rib “segments” won’t look right. Also don’t turn to tight or you will pull the rib to hard and you won’t to see the segmentation.

Only do enough turns with the v-rib to get to right behind the Bead. Try not to overlap the vinyl once you get to the bead.

Tie in the v-rib and whip finish the fly. Glue your thread wraps at the eye and your ready to catch some fish.

This fly should be in every fly box nationwide. Nicely tied my man.. could you add a collar to that one if you wished ?

How do you guys fish this one ? I use it as a searching pattern in high water... not as my go-to fly.. but I know it certainly provides huge numbers for those who fish religiously as a single fly 1 foot below an indicator.

(I do use it in fast water stretches in Arkansas and it work quite well.)

happy tying - Brian

I prefer to add something extra to v-rib midges. Sometimes I will add a wing of flash material or an ostrich collar of a matching collar. I like these in slow water fished deep. Like down past outlet 3. There are lots of colors that work too, black, white, grey, olive, brown, amber, red, etc. I think I'll try one tomorrow. Plus, I've taken it on myself as a personal challenge to catch a fish on a beadhead renegade dead drifted. (Somebody asked a question about this on a previous post) So, its 12, i'm getting up at 5, and I still have flies to tie. Wish me luck.

I never did get the beadhead renegade tied. Turns out I had homework that was due yesterday on Wed., so I started that at midnight, finished by 2 and emailed it. Figured I better skip the tying and get my 4 hours of sleep. Still made it down to montauk. I caught fish on a couple of new patterns. I'm going to try and post pics today or tomorrow as long as I get my dad's camera from him today. My camera just isn't good enough for close ups. If I can't get pictures, I will at least provide descriptions because I feel pretty good about these.

I was over at Mtn River Fly Shop last week and saw a variant of the Tungsten V-Rib that is supposed to be tearing them up. It was just a v-rib with a turn or two of peacock herl under the bead. Interesting enough, the color that they were supposed to be on was a dun grey color.

I have never personally had success on that color, but that don't really mean anything.

Anyone else?
