Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 15, 2016 Root Admin Posted August 15, 2016 Trout fishing has gotten really good the last week. Maybe all the rainbows that have been down at the Landing have moved up where we can see them caught now... not sure. Of course this weather change is very welcomed. If you watch One Cast, you've been seeing us throw 1/16th ounce jigs off the dock and catching a lot of trout. It's jut not happening on camera but all during the day. I've been handing my rod to people who are trying various lures off the dock to have them try throwing what we're throwing and they are having success too. The 2-pound line makes all the difference, plus you can't throw a jig that small using 4-pound line. The trout are holding high in the water column and I think it's because they're feeding on midges that have swam up to the surface to hatch. I haven't cleaned any of these fish we're catching or pumping their stomachs but most are fat with something and I'm assuming it's midges. It's not often we see Chuck Gries, fly fishing guide, fishing out in front of our dock but he was there yesterday and his clients were fishing a Zebra Midge under a float. And yes they did very well. We've been throwing small jigs other places on the lake and doing almost as good with the exception of some areas up in the trophy area. Still can't figure out why some stretches are void of fish like from Lookout to the Narrows and Big Hole to the MDC Ramp. Now that's my experience... others might be killing them. But it's been that way most of the summer, for me. Our water temperature is still holding just below 50 degrees which is excellent for this time of year. We're hoping for a non eventful fall season as far as water problems go.
