What do you think about them?

I have used them a couple of times and my thoughts are.

PRO:

They seem to cast a dry fly better. It seems they land "softer" (of course I know that may be in part to my good or bad casting ability)

Easy to tie on due to the knoted ends.

CON:

They dont seem very durable. The ones I have are fraying a little bit after short useage. How does that affect the strength?

Tying tippet to the leader. Is there an easy way to do this without binding the leader too much? It seems to get a good tight knot, I have to really cinch down on the tippet, which in turns "cuts" into the furled leader, and then it starts to fray.

Anyone have an opinion on them or have any suggestions for me to help extend the life of my furled leaders?

A friend of mine, he may post, who fishes streamers, etc that require stipping, says they twist on the strip. This may or may not affect your use, but its something to consider.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Never used them- I guess I have to try. A rep dropped off some http://www.blueskyfly.com/ leaders one time but they're still in a box someplace. Am interested to see where this topic goes- may have to carry them in the shop.

Personally I like the mono furled leaders over thread leaders. I like the suppelness of the mono. (no memory) The thread styles seems to soak lots of water after a few casts and tend to sink quicker. I have used them for several years now and its really all I ever use.

I have used Blue Sky leaders for years, and think they are the best. The second best is the furled leaders from Feather Craft in St Louis with a tippet ring. The Blue Sky leaders turn over better than any others I’ve tried. All furl leaders twist to some extent especially if put under tension [as in hung up or snagged]. Before I tie on a new tippet, I dry cast the line without tippet or fly. This takes any twist out of the leader so it is relaxed again. Normally I fish a furled leader unless the fish get leader shy, then I switch to a mono leader… usually Frog Hair. In my opinion, furled is great for dry fly fishing because you can grease it up so it floats like a cork.

My furled leader setup goes like this:

  • My fly line is connected to the Furled Leader by a loop to loop connection.
  • My Furled Leader is connected to a 12 to 18 inch piece of tippet/leader material that has a Surgeons Loop at one end by a loop to loop connection.
  • This piece of the leader is tied to another lighter weight piece of tippet material with a Triple Surgeons knot.
  • My fly is then tied onto this with an Orvis knot.

If I want it to float, Mucilin seems to work the best. I usually use them only for dry fly fishing.

Why do most only use furled leaders for dry fly fishing? I have had most sucess with them nymphing and even using streamers?

Dano - For me, it's just a lack of trying it. Therefore, my New Year's resolution will be to give furled leaders a chance outside of the dry fly world.
